Thoughts? How hard to get into??

Great merit aid for HYPS level kids. Up-and-coming (likely to be the Stanford of SoCal in the not-too-distant future). Lots of $$ for facilities and faculty in the recent past, while the UCs faced budget cuts.

Very good school in many areas. Hard to get into. Post reported 51,000 applications this year. Great alumni network and they get unbelievably good instructors. And yes they are getting tons of $$.

Do kids who get into HYP choose USC due to $$$

If you're not attractive/rich and in a top frat or sorority you're irrelevant there. Just being honest.

No. It's a peer to UMich and Tulane, and in-state kids that can't get into UCLA or Berkeley.

Can you elaborate?

The campus is a shithole and its in a terrible area.

I've heard the campus is nice...and right next to a terrible area.

We toured it last year and were very surprised at the condition of the buildings and the campus as a whole - with the exception of the sports facilities - that seems to be where the money goes. Plus, you have to drive through a very scary area just to get there. There are cops very visibly stationed all over campus, but my DD did not feel safe at all.

All the social life is through Greek system (and local rich kids that have hooks at Hollywood parties). It's hard to make new friends because so many people already know each other or only associate with 'verified' Greek members. If your kid is attractive with a high social IQ send them and get into a good Greek house. Or if they're a dorky film student. I don't think USC is a great college for normal middle class transplants.

in exactly which department is it a peer of Michigans?

Not a Michigan booster btw - but USC is honestly a regional school.

the only students I know that enjoyed their USC experience were really hot girls. And not DC hot - or SEC hot - but truly 'looks like they work work in the industry' hot.

Want to back that up with data? California is a big, heavily populated state. If USC is regional, how isn't UMich with 80% of the class being Michigan, Ohio, Chicago kids?

As for peer: They're peer in the standard generic undergrad departments, U-M has engineering, USC has film, big sports, big Greek scenes, same test scores, same acceptance rate.
