ACT Essay - A few questions...

Anonymous
As a general rule, do most of the top 50 schools require the ACT essay portion?

Is the consensus to take the essay portion every time you take/retake the ACT?

If my DC takes the essay portion, but a particular school he is applying to does not require it, can we remove that score from what is sent to that school?

Thank you.

You can't remove the essay score from the report.

Retake the essay if you want to get a higher score. You cannot remove the essay score from the score report when sending to colleges.

if a school doesn't require, you don't have to remove it. they won't look at it.

Do they superscore the essay score?

I wouldn't worry about this too much. It's probably a good idea to take the writing portion of either the SAT or the ACT in case your child becomes interested in a school that requires or recommends it. Then he/she doesn't have to go back and take the entire test again just to get the essay portion. But in general schools do not put a lot of weight on the writing because of all the changes the scoring has gone through and the subjective nature of the scoring. If your kid has good test scores on the main test, I particularly would not be overly concerned.

When you say "they" I'm not sure who you mean. It's not the College Board/ACT that does the superscoring, it's the colleges and they all have different policies/ways of doing things.
