| I noticed my daughter's public school friends are on facebook bragging about their high-tech headphones they got for Christmas, with comments about how they can't wait to use them at school. One joked about never having to listen to Mr [Teacher] ever again. I asked my daughter and she said students at her old school listen to music literally all day—which isn't allowed at her private school. Wasn't sure how widespread this is, nor why teachers would ever allow it? |

You believed this or thought it plausible enough that you had to ask this question on DCUM?
|
| Seriously? |
| My child's school has them on the supply list. They are used for testing. |
| My DD uses them as ear muffs. She has a hard time focusing on individual work with others making sounds around her. She's allowed to wear headphone but they're not plugged into anything. She at a private school and has accommodations for this. |
I believe what is plausible - that students listen to music and tune out their teachers? It's not only plausible, they're bragging about it. |
| yes a higher % of the academically disinterested go to public school - letting them zone out with electronics is a great way for those serious about schooling to not be bothered by future tailgate state attendees. |
Interesting way of looking at it. |
And teens always tell the truth? |
| I asked my middle schooler (public) this question, and he said that of course the kids aren't allowed to wear headphones or earbuds in class, unless they are watching an online video as part of the instruction. They can wear headphones or earbuds in the hall between classes but can only have one ear covered, so they can hear what's going on around them. |
My public HS kid also needs them for school; however, any teacher at her HS would not tolerate a student having them on throughout class, other than for a specific assignment as needed. The reason some schools forbid kids from wearing hoodies' hoods up in class is that a hood hides earphones or especially earbuds. OP, are kids at your DC's school allowed to have hoods pulled over their heads in class? |

My kids weren't allowed to use earphones/headphones. Phones either. If the phone went off and it was heard, it got taken away until the end of the day. A note came home saying it was a problem I was responsible to correct. Second time caught the phone was kept for the remainder of the year. Head phones, earphones, buds, were taken before stepping inside the school.
Catholic school does not play. |
Same policy at our public school. Also no hoods up on hoodies. |
| they are allowed too. its 2016, They can listen to music when they are doing busywork. I don/t think they will listen to music when MR..... is talking |
| I'm in SF and we recently toured a high school (public) where I saw kids with head phones on. The senior giving the tour said the kids who want to learn will, and the kids who don't want to learn, make that clear. |
