| Forgot to order from Amazon, and looks like I am too late for arrival before Christmas. Live in NW DC. TIA. |
| I've seen it at Wegmans. Have you checked the baking aisle at Safeway, Whole Foods, or whatever supermarket is near you? |
Haven't had luck at local grocery stores except once a couple of years ago at the Palisades Safeway. Unfortunately, pretty far from a Wegmans. |
| Yep, regular grocery store, the baking aisle. It comes in a jar. |
| Giant has had it. |
| I wonder if it would be possible to visit one of the bakeries in the area that sell mincemeat pies or pastries and ask if they could sell you some of the mincemeat they use.. |
| Saw it at Harris Teeter. I was surprised to learn that the mincemeat they were selling does not actually contain meat. |
| Any grocery store |
Because it isn't 1840. |
Traditional mincemeat recipes call for beef suet and or chopped beef. The Nonesuch brand of jarred mincemeat has a small amount of beef, way down at the bottom of the ingredients list. |
| I saw jars of it at the Fresh Market on Rte 7 last week. |
| I thought mincemeat was just ground beef? |
Nope, it's a traditional English food that contains dried fruits like raisins and currants, various spices, and some beef suet or chopped beef. It's used as a filling for pies and pastries. I've never been a fan - must be an acquired taste! It is very traditional for the holidays, though. |
OP here. Mincemeat pie with hard sauce (seasoned with Bourbon) is super yummy. Traditional at holidays for generations in my family. |
Whole Foods in North Bethesda had it last week - it was in a standalone thing near the dog food (not kidding). |
