| We'd really like our kids to attend a diverse middle and then high school, but ones where kids of different races actually become friends and learn to respect each other. All the videos and online slideshows I see of schools in MoCo, Arlington, etc., indicate there's segregation, and I think that's almost worse than attending a more homogeneous school since it teaches kids to discriminate from an early age. Anyone got any ideas? |
| AP or IB? budget? commute? |
| Doesn't matter what kind of a program. Within a 45 minute public transit commute to Metro Center. |

so you are looking for the magic school filled with magic negros? so your kids will grow to understand diversity in all its richness and grow up to be compassionate and caring just by association?
OP, the districts are all large and have schools that largely reflect the homes surrounding them - for better and worse. |
| You make friends with your classmates. Top classes will generally be whites and radians other classes will be mainly blacks and Hispanics. Clubs have some more diversity but they generally skew higher res which means more whites and Asians less blacks and hispanics |
Fairfax County Public School: West Potomac, Edison, Falls Church, Annandale, South Lakes, Herndon, Stuart |
| Our kids are at West Potomac and it is extremely diverse which is great. I will say that it isn't without challenges though, particularly with the lowest income, non-immigrant population as well as the upper middle class kids with access to $ for alcohol and pot. Also aside from gym and the first two years of foreign language and some electives, the kids are separated by ge, honors and AP but the diversity is still there - just divided at that point more by socio-economics/family emphasis on education (greater among some immigrant cultures than others). |
OP here: Not sure what your angle is but why would I not want my children to have friends of different ethnicities (and nationalities and religions)? I am in a mixed race/religion/nationality family, and I grew up with kids from a wide range of backgrounds. Mixing with people who are not exactly like you is a far more interesting and rewarding way to go through life. You should try it. |

My idea is to stop seeing everything in terms of race. What about diversity in SES, political views, language at home, geographic origin... |
It is easy to find high schools with many nationalities, ethnicities and religion and almost every hs in fairfax county, Arlington, and Montgomery county has it. SES diversity is the harder nut to crack. |

Oh, bless your heart. You do realize these kids self-segretate at school, right? |
Professing a desire for color blindness is one of those inherent white privilege perspectives on race. It's fascinating. |
