any ideas for a visual arts camp -- any medium will do -- for the week of august 17 for an artistically minded 6 yo? we live in bethesda.

Look into Glen Echo and the Corcoran (Camp Creativity, in upper Georgetown). I have no idea if they have camps scheduled for mid-August, but they're both excellent programs that we've done for years.
