Our 8 year old daughter with HFC loves vocal performance. She has taken classes at Imagination Stage but we are looking for a individual voice teacher because she is interested in formal voice training. She is talented, has a beautiful voice and picks up and memorized a tune immediately but she has ADHD and dyslexia as well so it will take someone with patience. Any recommendations?
Not sure what HFC is, or where you are located. But our similar dyslexic/ADHD child is doing well at Not Just Dance in Chantilly. Their voice teacher does private lessons too I believe.
Op here: sorry for the typo - was supposed to say "HFA" (high functioning Autism) and we are in Silver Spring, MD
No experience with voice teachers, but we have found the people at Harmonic Music (on Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase DC) to be autism friendly.

Ask your nearby high school.
I began taking voice lessons in middle school. My middle school teacher patched me through to the one who was associated with the high school. I think it was unrelated to school budget, not associated with school, but the HS would provide a venue and a couple of private teachers that they recommended. The pay was to her directly, I believe. Anyway, it ended up being a great experience. I loved the confidence, little tips and tricks for taking care of my 'instrument,' practicing what I could do on my own, and then they'd add to it by showing me a better way. I'm 32, sing only for fun, and it all stuck with me. I'm so glad. |
