| As a teen my daughter was really status conscious. Everything had to be branded. Now she's a SAHM and displaying a gift for thrift shopping. She's requested handmade pillowcases from her aunt for Xmas for the children, based on their hobbies (trains and maps). I feel unaccountably proud. |
| It's nice the aunt has the interest |
| That's great if the aunt wants to spend the time and energy doing that. |
| I woul be more proud if my daughter was a high earner who could afford expensive things. |
| This is a great story, OP, and congratulations! I've got two teen DDs, and it's nice to hear. One of mine is wrapped up in all the consumerism (clothes, makeup) right now, but I do believe that I've planted the seeds of something else, something deeper to turn to besides glitz. Sounds like your seeds have sprouted and you should be proud. Thanks for giving me a little extra boost of hope for my own. |
DCUM never lets you down.

If she is thrift shopping, she is still shopping. Handmade pillow cases are special and still very status conscious. Your post is lame. She probably got it from you. |
Absolutely. Right on time! OP I hope she's happy. That's definitely a great way for kids to grow up imo. |
I'm not OP, but that was uncalled for. |
Maybe she CAN afford expensive things, but CHOOSES not to buy up tons of stuff with her money. |
New PP. Idk it actually kind of sounds right though |
I agree. The first op was unnecessarily nasty, but the op's title is wrong. Her daughter isn't moving away from consumerism unless she's only purchasing what she needs rather than what she wants. There's nothing to indicate that from her post. Only that DD isn't buying full retail, which reflects fiscal responsibility, not that she's turned her back on consumerism. |
| Good for her OP. Finding joy in the simple things life has to offer will make her feel fulfilled. I love handmade gifts, I am sad all of the talented older generation of my family are gone. Encourage her to take a class and learn to craft things herself, so she can pass it down to her children. |
+1 Ignore the snark. They think they matter. Lol. |
You can't be a new PP. Use NP instead. |
