Tops/accessories with navy work pants

Anonymous
I got a pair of navy work pants for $17 this weekend. The problem is that my shirt/sweater collection is mostly black and blue (and some gray.) I rarely wear navy because it doesn't go with black and I don't wear bright colors, so it's hard to match. What neutral colors go well with navy? I was thinking cream, gray, and olive, but suggestions are appreciated.

And what shoes? Are navy suede pumps okay? Literally all my work shoes are black so I'll probably need to get something new to match. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. Bought these and they are shown with white top and black shoes... http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=242781052

I'll wear with longer sweater or untucked shirt and want cold weather footwear ideas.

I wear my navy pants with a gray sweater, cream, orange, or Kelly green (my style leans a little preppy). I think pink looks good with navy, too. For shoes I have a pair of navy flats or a metallic flat. I have camel colored loafer pumps that I wear with my navy dresses and skirts. I personally would not do olive, I think that's a little drab.

First of all, scrap the idea that navy and black don't go together. They do. You just have to be intentional about it, and choose a brighter navy, not one that looks like it might be mistaken for black.

Navy can be used as a true basic -- gray goes great with it as does cream, but other good more unusual options are pale, ballerina pink -- think pale pink merino shell, navy pants. Also, if you are a bit braves, other blues like aqua and turquoise look great with navy.

What's wrong with bright colors?

Navy is pretty versatile. I'd look for prints with beige/tan, red/maroon, pink, green, lighter shades of blue, lavender, etc. You could also do a navy and white stripe or polka dot and add more color with the shoes/bag/belt.

Navy pumps should be fine, albeit a tad dull. I also wear quite a bit of tan with my navy skirts. A leopard print would be cute and a little more interesting.

You can wear pretty much anything with navy. And black works fine. In fact, for shoes I'd wear black over navy, because it won't look as matchy-matchy.

I like navy with peachy colors, also mustard yellow.

Pairing navy with black is actually on-trend, and it looks fantastic if you do it right.

I wear a lot of navy but stick to neutrals over bright colors.

For shoes, if wearing black, I like to use patent vs regular leather so it looks more intentional. I also wear gray, brown/cognac brown, and nude.

Do it so it's clear you're doing it on purpose. Personally, I like to wear black patent shoes with navy pants, just to heighten the contrast. Choose a black top with a little texture. I also have a black-and-navy print scarf that helps tie everything together.

I am a big fan of Stacy London'S What Not to Wear show. I remember distinctly that she used the rule that navy is a neutral - and neutrals go with neutrals. Black, navy, white, etc - you know what a neutral is. I have used this rule myself and very often wear navy and black together. Experiment and I'm sure you will find a lot that you already own goes with navy.
