IMF, World Bank and Trump

For U.S. citizens at the DC-based international financial institutions, the IMF/World Bank/IDB, what does the election of Trump mean for their jobs, etc.?

who knows. probably not much, unless some of the crazies really get their way and the institutions are abolished...

Depends on whether Marine Le Pen wins the French presidency and if the EU collapses

US is the largest shareholder, and gets to pick the head of the Bank...

Which they did already for the next 5 years just a couple months ago. Same guy who has been there for the last 5 years.

And yes the PP is correct, those are not federal institutions and the results of the US election won't have much impact right now. They are membership based international institutions with member countries. At least at the World Bank, there were cost cutting efforts going on for the past few years anyways.

Good trolling effort, OP.

NP here. I don't think the op is necessarily a troll. The mood at the WB was quite different under GWB's appointee.

And yet the person in charge at WB is going to probably last longer than Drump.

Was there some talk, though, about Trump thinking that, if other nations are not making their agreed-upon contributions, then the US should stop doing so. I thought his view was that we are not only the largest donor, but that other relatively wealthy countries are failing to make their donations, resulting in a significant US subsidy beyond it's apportioned share. I am not finding an easily available source for that being his view, but seem to recall hearing it over the past few months.

Also, the US government could presumably change the rules for foreign employees of international organizations. While it would be a terrible idea in my view, I assume the federal government could, for example, restrict work visas provided to spouses, and disallow employees remaining in the US after they retire, regardless of their long length of service and living in the states. Terrible ideas, but I do think it is good to be alert.

Most long term foreign employees I know also become green card holders, along with their spouses. They are not illegal immigrants and neither they are uneducated or without any clout. I would love to see how US protects its own commercial interests outside of US if it takes these kinds of actions.

Remember how closely aligned Bush family was with the Saudis? Everyone is in the pockets of foreign interests, especially Trump, who is now working with Indians to build a Trump Tower in India. Anyone who thinks that there will not be an increase in HIB visas or military spending is stupid.

PP here. Didn't say they would be smart ideas, just that there are ways the US government can get at the international organizations and exert leverage. Terrible ideas, but who knows given the incoming administration.

Several World Bank people in my building.

One is a budget analyst , the others work on some type of project.
They all feel quite uneasy. There are thousands of WB positions that can very easily be cut.

The U.S. and Germany, I think maneuvered to get Jim Kim reappointed early for another five-year term at the Bank. Not much will change at the Fund.
