Why didn’t APS start this week?

I'm so sick of people saying this. I engaged a ton on this, and we still ended up with this shitty calendar this year where we start a week earlier than last year and still get out at the same time in June.

Because they added a bunch of non Christian holidays that we didn’t previously have off.

Like which ones?
Personal I think each relooks holiday should have 1 day off if it is celebrated during a school day. Christmas on Sunday? See you Monday.

To be fair FCPS had a draft calendar that the other local districts aligned to then FCPS switched it last minute.

The calendar was adopted in December 2020, that’s plenty of time

Lots of people book summer vacations well before that timing.

Well guess what you know they are off all of July and 1/2 of august. The end of august is hurricane season.

The hard part is there aren't camps the week before school starts, so people use that week as vacation to fill the childcare gap. But it's not clear what week that will be. We already booked our vacation rental for next August, as it was filling up. Hopefully we predicted the right week before school starting.

APS really should set a calendar earlier. It's not like holidays aren't known more than a year in advance. My school district as a kid had a 5 year calendar and each year they set the calendar for the 5th year out.

Ever consider just taking time off and staying home or taking local day trips? A week of "childcare" doesn't mean your whole family has to leave town together. And if you have to plan vacation from your employer, do you really need to do it 9 months ahead?

Yeah, I get two weeks of vacation a year, I don't want to waste my one week of summer vacation. Why can't APS just decide the calendar sooner? So lazy and disorganized.

My child doesn't even have a schedule and school starts Monday. Nobody answers the phone, nobody answers emails. This is lovely.

Middle school? We've had years (pre Covid) where the kid got it the first day in homeroom. Not unusual for APS.

+1

Just go to the TA. They do a great job walking kids through the building during the first week.

Yorktown HS virtual option. But in talking to other parents of both virtual and in person, several don't have schedules yet either. I did just get a generalized schedule a second ago, but not specific classes. Guess I'll just be patient.
