You don't know how many older Rec parents think their kids is an absolute star. Ummm, the bar is pretty low for the kids playing Rec at 11-12 years old. Put them in a travel game in top league/division and see how they do. |
This is so true. We have a u11 son who plays for an ECNL club for soccer and travel baseball. It just became too much and he decided to focus on soccer, which was great for us because those games are brutal (both in number and duration). He wanted to try rec this Spring because he still enjoyed playing, but disliked the level of commitment for both. Rec baseball was the biggest joke. |
Wait! A parent in the DMV who thought their kid was an absolute star in a sport, but they aren't? I don't believe you! |
| 10:55 and 11:09 read together is just perfect. |
| The only family I knew who did this only managed it for 1-2 years before u12 then had to pick and picked travel baseball. Travel baseball is not that much nor is soccer but together the baseball ramps up by u12 and it seems like such a conflict and stress. They managed it for 1-2 years only because they were good friends with the baseball coach who scheduled everything around their kids if they could. Those saying oh but multi-sport! There is rec, there are seasons too. |
| I think being a multi-sport athlete is important but 2 travel sports with the same season is tough and both coaches would have to be supportive. DS played travel soccer and rec baseball for years. His soccer coach made it clear that soccer had to be first. DS only made it to about 1/3 of the baseball games and missed most practices. DS really wanted to play travel baseball and found a baseball coach who agreed to allow it him to continue with soccer but the TD at the soccer club said no way even if he moved down a team. He chose to play travel baseball and MSI classic. Both coaches were supportive but the schedule was hell and he rarely made a soccer game. Now he’s back to travel soccer and given up on travel baseball. I asked about the policies with each club that made him an offer. They said sure he can play baseball but soccer must always come first. |
Irrelevant to the point as to whether baseball players are unathletic. |
| The only way this would work would be for one sport to be rec and for the parent to coach the rec sport so they could pick practice days that don't conflict and make game schedule requests. |
True but it doesn't require as much athletic ability as soccer or basketball. Its tough to hit a 75 mph or higher curve ball but thats more timing than athletic ability. Other than that position for position baseball take less. |

I disagree - hitting a baseball is known as being the hardest thing you can do in sports:
"Here's why. A unique blend of physics and neuroscience makes the skill astronomically difficult. There are few aspects of life where you can fail seven out of 10 times and still be considered great at what you do." |
