How much outside time do very young kids need?

I don’t know why this thread got so competitive! Four hours is not a magic number for any age but certainly not necessary for very young kids.

It's not supposed to be competitive. The OP asked how much young kids need. I'm not sure what we'd do inside all day with very young kids, and mine were happy outside so I guess mine needed a lot.

My toddler plays, reads, paints, colors, does letters, imaginary games, legos, etc inside. We go outside to the park everyday and he plays in the grass and dirt, mows with his bubble mower, have a snack but not for more than two hours if that. I just don’t see the benefit of forcing him into a stroller just to make someone’s arbitrary four hour comment.

+1 I don't know why people are bragging about keeping young babies outside in strollers all day. Yes, they should get some outside time. But I don't see what's the benefit of 4 hrs outside if a big chunk of that is stuck in a stroller.

+2. It’s ridiculous.

During the week it’s probably just an hour. Weekends I would say 6 hours. She probably doesn’t need more than an hour, but I have created an outdoorsy chick and now have set myself up for this until pre teen hood

I bet this is the only honest answer.

It's hilarious...all this bragging that their kids get 4 hours of outside time... constrained in a stroller with no personal interaction.

No one said that your kids need to be only in a stroller outdoors. In fact, if you are, you're doing it wrong and ignoring all the good advice on this thread (to wear your baby while walking, to get a bike trailer, to go to the park or the pool or put your kid in a playpen outdoors). But I guess people see it as a threat that other people parent differently from them.

wasn't the complaining mom the one with a toddler and a 9 month old baby? the baby isn't doing any of these things...which is why people go out for long walks with their babies or keep them outside in the fresh air.
