Girl’s name: Kate v. Serena?

Love Serena. I like Kate, but there are a million Kate/Katies and I wouldn't name a child a nickname only.

Kate

I know two Kates who are not Katherine/Catherine

They have done perfectly well personally and professionally without having a long "formal" first name.

KAT-ERENA

That’s a Russian Eastern European name Katrina Wit.

Katarina Witt is German. In Russian, the name is Ekaterina, with a typical nickname of Katya.

I prefer Kate. Good luck deciding.

I prefer Kate by a mile although Serena isn't horrible. Serena Williams obviously rocks and wears it well.

We named our daughter Kathryn too and she goes by Katie or Kate. I was worried people might call her Kathy, which is not my favorite either, but it’s never been a problem.

I’m one of many, many Kate’s (although it’s a nickname for Kaitlin). I like the idea of just Kate. I don’t particularly like Kaitlin and would’ve preferred just Kate as a legal name.

Serena wouldn’t be my choice, but not because of any name associations. I’m also pretty shocked hearing about the negative responses to Serena Williams. She is an incredible, strong, beautiful, and talented woman. And if she were my daughter, I’d be hella proud of her.

I love Serena Williams and thinks she is amazing. It is sad that there is no much internalized bias and racism on a NAME. Sometimes I wish I\we had named our DD that - when I hear it I still love the way it sounds with our last name. So light and feminine. But I guess we would have been accused of choosing a "black" name

Well I have a blond blue eyed Serena, and she LOVES Serena Williams. It’s cute, and I love it.

But also also love the simplicity of Kate. Beautiful name that could never go wrong

Kate is cute but it is so common that I would never use that name.

Also, there are going to be people who call Kate Katie. Is Katie going to bother you?

+1 I also like Serena Kate.

There are a million ways to spell Kaitlin, Katelyn, Catelynn, etc. Beautiful name, but every one I’ve met bemoans the spelling.
