When do kids get a cell phone?

I have an 11 yr old 6th grader and not yet..I think sometime around 8-9th grade maybe.

DS had my old iPhone activated with talk and text but everything else blocked at 11. He would ride with friends all around on bikes and be gone for hours. We could track him and contact him to check in. At 14 he has a newer model and access to everything. It was a slow transition and he doesn’t have unlimited access.

Now DD is 11 and no plans to get her one yet. She doesn’t have a need. If she started riding bikes for hours with friends we would consider. But until there is a need she doesn’t get one.
