Yes! Agree. We are at a school where there are no more IPL slots. I would gladly drive somewhere else to get a half year of K in person. We are trying to get a meeting with our own principal to talk about options but to no avail. Not sure who the right person is to ask/suggest. Anyone know? I do have a feeling one barrier will be concern that the WOTP families are taking slots away from EOTP families, even though those slots are currently unused.

They 100% won't go for this, the logistics would be too difficult.

We are a Hearst family (1 K classroom and a couple of Cares rooms but that's it). If EoTP families didn't want spots, we'd definitely drive to an open spot. Would be nice to just have the opportunity. Instead, nada. Couldn't be less impressed. So glad we are leaving the school after this year. Not even given a shot at returning this year. But great job teachers for being out there saying this is acceptable. Just b/c our kid is doing fine with the 12-hour per week curriculum, doesn't mean she isn't a mess in different ways.

Other WOTP schools forced teachers without Ada and cares back. This isn’t on the Hearst teachers. This is on the Hearst Principal for refusing to do it. Lay the blame where it belongs .

The great news is that according to CDC schools can reopen safely with proper precautions without contributing significantly to community spread, so there is no need to make a choice between children and older adults in terms of sacrifice.

Does anyone know if ADA accommodations are for the whole year? If it really is as safe to reopen schools then it would make sense that ADA accommodations would be much more limited (eg immunocompromised or cannot take the vaccine). I would love to see more students back in term 4 but am also concerned about the the fall, where many ADA accommodations could mean students distance learning from a classroom, as is the case for much of the current in person learning. includes some in The fact that many in person learners have specials online from school worries me. If vaccinated specials teachers are exempted due to potential exposure to too many students the same principle could apply in the fall too meaning that in person school may include multiple periods of distance learning.

ADA accommodations are for the remainder of the school year. They will not be revisited until the fall.

CARES accommodations (i.e if your school age child is not attending school) will expire March 31 unless public health emergency is extended by the mayor.

And DCPS approved the plan.

Probably the Chancellor? The reality is that most of the in-person slots that available are in Wards 7 and 8. Additionally, each school came up with their own reopening plan, to fit their school. The reopening plan in another school may look very different from the plan your IB is doing. I think the idea that people from other wards would come in, take these slots, and then potentially complain about how their new school was handling reopening compared to the IB school is more than anyone wants to take.

With the current vaccine priority for teachers if the schools are not open in Term 4 for any kid that wants to attend in person then I think the WTU will have done irreparable harm to the esteem in which teachers are held. The oft used phrase employed by politicians of honorable public servants like “cops, nurses, firefighters, and teachers” will have to change and teachers will become just another category of working stiffs.

Absolutely agree. I'm all for firing them all... lifelong liberal democrat here. And there will be not maybe public school students left to teach.

Why do some of you feel the need to say your liberal and a Dem? Like that makes you a good person? I'm no conservative but Liberals have done very little over the years, they're just the lesser evil.

And you are also dramatic, even if all the white or rich kids left there would be PLENTY of low SES kids left to focus on. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

DP. Is this a serious question? Because everybody who expresses urgency about opening schools gets labeled as a Trumper. This issue has been hopelessly politicized, which is a large part of why schools are still closed. It has nothing to do with pretending to be a "good person".

And on your second point, if most of the higher SES kids were to leave DCPS, it would send DCPS into a downward spiral in terms of test scores and reputation, and probably in terms of the quality of education for low SES kids as well. The diversity of the school system would decline. You cannot wish for this to happen.

Yep let’s go back to the days of Barry where DCPS only had low SES kids, was ranked last of all states in education, and had no money because no middle or UMC families lived in the city, and houses were dirt cheap which meant no taxes/revenues for the city.

I won’t even go into the crime stats. There was a reason it was called the murder capitol and drugs were rampant. City services basically non-existent for trash, etc....

Really sick of hearing this- I went to DCPS while Barry was mayor and it was fine. Yes, I am sure that many schools have improved, but there were many middle and UMC parents who still sent their kids to at least Hardy, Deal, Ellington, SWW, Banneker and Wilson, so please avoid rhetoric about DCPS spiraling back down to those days and it being awful.

The district can’t get substitutes, who would teach?

I think it depends on the reopening plan your school took. If the school opened up class by class (e.g., if Teacher A goes back, they offer spots only from their class), then I think you'll see more kids going back for Term 4. In our school, this is the path they chose, and I know a number of parents turned down slots because they weren't sure what it would look like, or were worried it would be a mess or unsafe. So far, it's been really positive, so I think if they offer seats to fill the classes (at the still smaller size), more parents will accept spots in Term 4, even if they turned it down in Term 3.

If the school pushed to give everyone 2 days a week, I don't see how you get more kids back in school without more teachers going back. But as more vaccines become available, maybe more teachers will come back. Let's hope. we've been really happy with the in person experience so far, and I wish more kids got to have it if they want it.
