Bad grades? Let's teach them less

Anonymous
I have a 3rd grader with dyslexia, and this is such utter BS. The 3rd grade reading curriculum does nothing to address reading deficits, which apparently at least 50% of MCPS 3rd graders have. Teaching them less is not going to help. DS does well in math, but the math curriculum is not designed to catch up struggling kids. I get that grades matter for high school, and think there should be some way to handle that, but teaching less of the same crap is not going to help anyone.

I have had kids in MCPS for eight years and I feel like this a constant theme.

Instead of actually doing things to educate our kids better (effective curriculum, smaller class sizes, etc), MCPS resorts to idiotic nonsense like this.

It is all about optics with MCPS. Not about actual results.

My kids are failing, therefore everyone knows DL is a failure. Anyone who says their kids aren't failing is a liar or an evil, evil teacher.

How are less project checks and less content going to help anyone? Coming from a poor immigrant family, I am tired of all the excuses people are coming up with as to why some kids are not performing. Kids have laptops, internet access, food, recorded sessions, can keep their cameras off, access to teachers after learning time, etc. Short of giving them new parents, what more can MCPS do? I truly feel for these kids but if MCPS can't come up with yet another solution that does not negatively impact those kids who are doing ok, then why do the kids doing well have to be slowed down.
Contact the parents to see what's up and if there truly is an issue as to why the kid can't log in or turn in assignments, then provide extra support, but I bet more often then not, it is a parent who just doesn't care enough. Ask me how I know.
Slowing the pace of the curriculum will not work.

Grow up! Many people made decisions Not to buy more house than they could afford, Not to divorce so their children wouldn't have to rely on 1 parent, Not to spit out more children than we could take care of under emergencies situations.. you know, act like responsible adults.

Yes, some students are failing. Find a way to hide the problem by raising their grades. PLEASE DO NOT LOWER STANDARDS for kids who can keep up. Why does MCPS have to screw up every kid???

This.

Yes!! Screw the ones who aren't keeping up. This world is getting Darwinian. Enough of the excuses: But the pandemic. But the teachers. But Trump. Blame yourself if your kids are not succeeding. Train your kids to have great organizational skills, study habits, and monitor / teach them to self-monitor. My God, it is not THAT hard.

No. No. NO! That is the fault of human beings not being prepared for everything that life could throw at you. A lot of people are caught with their pants down in a pandemic. While som were frivously spending, others were saving and investing. While some raised their kids and put in hard work rearing their kid, other's were not. While some made sure to choose a career that insulated them from financial collapse, others Di's not. While some stayed home and took proper precautions in March, others did not. Some families only chose to have one or two kids and others chose more. MCPS is closed because of the Pandemic and the public's selfish response and lack of responsibility. If you cannot handle these changes then you need to do some soul searching and make changes like a responsible adult.

Huh? Grades are by definition artificial. They're not like Newton's First Law.

PP is demonstrating the common belief that bad things only happen to people who make bad choices.

They need to get on birth control and grow up. Stop making excuses for not parenting and meeting your kids needs.

Last I checked, there is no method of birth control/contraception that works like a time machine.

It's called hindsight. The kid(s) are here now. They are your children. YOU take care of them and that includes educational supervision to make are they are successful. MCPS provides education, whether DL or on-person, and you provide supervision/support. And, let's not act like there was no problem pre-pandemic. It is now just exacerbated.
