DC Rats eating car wiring 🐀

12:24 here. Now they got to DS’s housemate’s Mazda. They chewed wires under the hood and also damaged the fuel line. That car had to be towed today.

Can someone, for the love of God, please explain how rodents of some form of other get under the hood of a car?
I come from a huge and 'vibrant' city in Europe and I have never ever heard of rats getting into people's vehicles. And there're plenty of rats there.

Squirrels hide nuts in your car and wheel wells too. Nothing like smelling fire coming from your car and realizing the nuts a squirrel hid in your wheel have set on fire as you were driving.

The rats are less likely to take up residence if the engine compartment is as cold as outside and they're not hidden from view.

Also try moving your car around occasionally - back it in sometimes.

PineSol supposedly gets rid of the rat pee scent.

My parents are from the high desert and kept the hood up, too, to keep the packrats away.

PP here. About $3,200 in damage to ours and $3,500 to the Mazda.
