Racists come from all ages and backgrounds. What is important for us to do is to call out these racists for their racist behavior and propaganda, so that we can defend systems based on merit, rather than the color of our skin. Don't let the racists win. |
| The first impression after reading this article is why there are so many racists in TJ. |
Or it could just be the narrator that is racist. |
And that should be your last impression about TJ as well after reading these threads. |
+100 I’m sure the TJ parents on these threads represent a minority viewpoint, but holy cow there are some very vocal racist parents at TJ towards whites, blacks and Hispanics. |
It's clear from the article that the question wasn't genuine, and it was phrased in a way that completely elided Didi's heritage. A question coming from a place of genuine curiosity would have sounded different, like, "Hey, I like your outfit. Can you tell me about it?" One thing that articles like this reinforce is how sheltered some of the TJ kids (white and Asian) are when it comes to how to speak to people who are different from them. They are not being appropriately equipped to exist in a multicultural environment, and it is going to hurt them down the road. |
| I think the best part of this was discovering the Quilette article in which a white dude who went to Harvard Law is very worried that he won't be able to pass his privilege along. |
I think he posts on Twitter as "TJ and Langley Parent" - wonder if he was one of the Langley parents who freaked out last year about the prospect of any change, ever, in the Langley boundaries. |
You mean the ones who insist on keeping an admissions process in which all students are evaluated by the same standards instead of a random lottery? |
More distressing to see idiots like you try to take away opportunities from a DIVERSE and intelligent student body at FCPS. |
+ 100. and please stop referring to her as "Black". She's not "Black" in the true sense. She's no different from a Nepali kid going to school at TJ. What she's going through is likely no worse or probably nowhere close to what the first Indian or first Korean kid went through when they applied and got into TJ. Where were the SJWs then? WAPO was probably a racist rag at that point in time and didn't even care to write about it. |
If TJ becomes a lottery then there is no reason to fund it as a gifted STEM school, it becomes another lottery program that incorporates above-average students who want to be part of a student body with school board approved racial percentages. This is no different than language immersion. |
Not really, if you are a minority you don't need to worry about that. |

When my son brought home made lunch to school, some kid would ask “what’s that?!” then quickly turn away. When my son fouled an opponent in a game, another player would shout “kungfu kick”! and mock him. When my son told a referee his name before a game, a random kid would mock “ what kind of circus name is that”! That’s just a couple of examples off the top of my head to show you how Asian kids are not sheltered from anything, on the contrary they are verbally bullied almost everyday everywhere. I tell my son, they are not bad kids, they are just not brought up properly. |
