Baby More Hungry But LC Said Not To Feed More

do not listen to the LC (or this poster, who can’t read.)

OP has a newborn - feed on demand. I guess there’s a theoretical possibility of the newborn overeating but it is MUCH worse not to feed enough. If you’re somehow worried your newborn will eat too much and get fat ... you have issues.

Feed the baby. I fed mine on demand. And it was not most convenient for me, but it was fabulous for the baby. A well fed baby is happy and secure.

No. Feed the baby period be it breastfeeding or formula. Listen to your baby. The baby is most important. And babies spit up if overfed.

This.
Do NOT listen to your LC. Some (not all) do have an agenda, and it sounds like this LC falls into that group. Both of my DDs needed more than 2oz of breastmilk at a time by 1mo. There’s nothing unusual about that at all. If the baby seems hungry, trust him. Pump what you can, then supplement with formula. I EBF’d my first DD and I am combo feeding my second because I’m not producing enough for her. It is fine.
This LC is the type who give them all a bad reputation. Drop her.

Yes, and my baby was EBF so I had no fears of overfeeding.

Feed on demand.

Listen to the LC. Otherwise why do you even have one?

Just let the baby keep nursing if they seem hungry. But don’t up the formula! That way your supply goes up and the baby gets more food/snuggles. Win/win

Read the thread. She's pumping and bottle feeding. And MANY women have low supply that does not increase even with round the clock nursing. And it's miserable to have a screaming, unhappy baby nursing 24/7 - there's no "win/win" about that. Literally, both the mom and the baby are miserable in that scenario.

Feed the baby.

Get a new LC.

Maybe she expected the LC would give her evidence-based advice that put the baby's health as the #1 concern, and balanced the burdens of breastfeeding with the actual benefits?

As someone who had similar issues - no latch and low production, consider how much angst BF is worth to you. At two months I switched over to all formula and it was fabulous. Everyone was better rested, baby started sleeping better, no more sitting on the stupid machine watching nothing really come out.

OP, if you’re still reading. This thread will likely not have any additional info. It will now be an opinionfest (of which yes this is also one). Hopefully you and baby had a better night. Trust your own parenting. Wish you well!

No no no. No.

Anonymous wrote:Op, did you start feeding the baby more? I literally woke up this morning thinking about this thread, the negligent lactation consultant, and this poor hungry baby. Please start feeding more. It can be really dangerous not to and there is no reason for your baby to go hungry when you are able to provide food.

I also had a terrible lc experience. I was given horrible advice at the hospital and my baby lost too much weight. Luckily the pediatrician caught what was going on right before we checked out and set me straight. I still had to take my son to an extra ped appointment his first week to make sure he gained the weight back. I still shudder to think what would have happened if we had gone home still following the lcs advice. Babies actually die from under feeding.

OP here. We have been feeding him more since he wanted it. We never kept him from eating. The LC said we were feeding him too much but I still kept feeding him. His weight is fine. We have a scale that we use to weigh him.

Babies will seem "hungry" and keep eating a bottle if you have the bottle tipped completely so their choice is to drink or drown.

If you're holding a bottle properly (parallel to the ground) to give the baby a CHOICE to eat or not, let the baby eat more.

If you're holding a bottle completely upside down so gravity will drip milk/formula out, then the baby may not actually be hungry.

Maybe you should have asked the LC WHY they said you're overfeeding and what the range is. Not one amount, but RANGE of what normal babies eat. You can also call the meds and ask a question at ANY TIME, not only when you have an appointment. Don't ask the internet if you're worried...
