How much do you earn to afford private school?

Moved our 2 kids into private this year for in person learning. Costs us 60k before all the BS.

Cramped our style. We make 425k.

For our friends that do pricey privates (30k and up) there usually seems to be some family money involved. Like, they know they don't need to save for college or retirement, so they're more willing to spend in the present.

This describes us as well

I went to a private school (in the south) and moved into a W district for schools. Annoyed about the slow reopening I checked out local private schools. Really not clear to me that there’s a big difference. HHI is $340.

$36 thousand in tuition on 250k income. I’m not going to say it’s fun, but I find the quality worth the sacrifice.

At 250k we couldn't swing it. This year, moved to 350k (new job), and with one left in mcps (a W school), we bailed: he will do private for the next 4 years.

How can you not afford one child on $250K?

459k one income. Two kids in private school due to covid and needing in person learning. 68k. No family money. We already have college fully funded, so we look at this like paying college out of pocket. Already setting aside 6k/mo for next year in case the public schools continue to fail us or we see a significant academic benefit to private.

DP.

Private HS is nearly $30k a year (or more, depending on the school). That’s a lot of money, and it definitely impacts saving for retirement and college.

Which school are you leaving and why aren’t you happy with it?

As someone who lives in a moderately priced part of Silver Spring, in part because then I can afford Catholic, I'm trying to figure out how you expect people to earn DC area salaries while sending their kids to parochial school in GA.

My point is there are cheaper options elsewhere.

“ It would be more of a struggle to pay for private on our income, but we could do it. We don't because my family has made education a priority for three generations and invested with that as a goal. ”

Three generations of “investing” in private school, and you can barely afford it. I don’t think this “investment” has had a great return.
