I love H Street so no hate from me but that Maryland house is 100 percent H Street proper, if that’s a thing. It’s a block and a half from the Atlas! |
I live a block away from H Street and have two kids in public school. A charter, but they went to DCPS for elementary. |
Oh wow, that place is great. And to keep this relevant to the thread, it has the following over the 8th & H house: 1. Location -- right next to Lincoln Park but also walkable to Eastern Market, Barracks Row, and still close enough to H to enjoy it 2. A backyard! 3. Amazing layout. That first floor would live so nicely for a family -- room to spread out but also easy flow. 4. Character. The fireplaces! the tile in the entry! The woodwork! This house will always look classic, whereas the 8th and H house will look dated in a couple years. And it's listed at 50k less. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that much -- sometimes places list low and go over asking while another house lists high and goes under, and in the end the result is the same. But if I were in the market, I'd bid on this and not on the other. Plus, while I think JO Wilson is a good school and probably only going to get better, Payne gets rave reviews from friends. |
Amazon Go is coming to H and 8th. Right down the street from Amazon-owned Whole Foods.

Downside is that Mass Ave has a LOT of traffic, and the house is located on an awkward intersection. |
I guess this is basically a grocery store? That isn't going to improve the problems at that corner. And it also makes no sense -- this neighborhood was once a relative food dessert, but now has a Whole Foods and Giant right on H, plus the Harris Teeter in NOMA and the Trader Joe's up by Union Market. I guess Bezos just wants to colonize it. Lame. |
So I'm taking from this that very few people who love H St actually have multiple school-age children who need to ride their bikes, walk to their friend's house 2 blocks away, walk home from school, go to the big field nearby to practice pitching or shots-on-goal.
|
There are tons of kids around here. What’s your point? |
*clutches pearls* Won't somebody think of the pitchers? You're dealing with a tiny sample on this forum of people who live in a small neighborhood. We personally don't have school-age kids yet, but I can assure you that we regularly see kids riding bikes, kids walking to and from school, and kids hanging out with their friends. But no, little league does not seem to be a big thing here. |
A shooting today a block from Whole Foods. Never change, H Street.

Incorrect. Capitol Hill Little League is well run and very popular. It may not be the baseball of the burbs, but it's a real thing. |
I weighed in on this thread saying I have two kids who go to L-T. We live a few blocks from 8th & H, IB for L-T. My kids play little league (CHLL) -- there is a big baseball field attached to L-T, as well as a batting cage. Both of my older kids ride bikes/walk around our block/in our alley on their own. My older kid (ES age) is not allowed to cross MD or H alone yet (traffic concerns) but can go in between (so basically between D and H), which allows her to go to/from L-T and to/from friends' houses. Not sure exactly what you're asking? |
DP, and I disagree. I don't think there are "tons" of elementary-aged kids ages 5-11 in the vicinity of this house. That was the original question. Anyone have that DCPS projected enrollment map handy? |
Finally contingent! |
This one closed yesterday at $1,331,325—about $56k over asking price. That's almost reasonable in this market. And yes, the last four digits of the closing price are the house number. Coincidence, or brilliant strategy by the buyers? |
