A 5% raise makes me angry.

YGBFKM.....

You're complaining about a 5% increase. If you like your job and company stay, there are plenty of others that are hurting much worse.

Feel blessed, otherwise move on.

My sentiments exactly

The military also gets tax-free BAH or free housing, tax-free pay in combat zones, socialized health care and no threat of getting fired even though salaries, technically, are low enough to qualify many families for the EITC. You can't compare apples to oranges.

Teachers in Fairfax County have not gotten a raise in two years (not even cost of living). 5% sounds pretty great!

The company that my husband is employed by had all of their employees take 6 weeks of work off with no pay and also cut out Christmas bonuses. In addition to that, they put a freeze on all raises.

The poster who is bitching about only getting a 5% raise should probably count her blessings. I'd bet that there are many people who would be more than happy to take her job. I bet those people won't be bitching and moaning because they only got a 5% raise.

I would take no increase in pay to have my husband home from the war. And yes, while my dh's job is secure he's severly underpaid to his counterparts in the civilian world.

OP congrats on getting new job. You're one of the lucky ones.

In spite of the economy and the thought that I should be happy to just be employed, I see my company's business booming, I've been working harder than ever, and I have very much contributed to the growing bottom line by offering a skill set that that no one else in the company possesses (this has allowed them to take in new business they previously couldn't). It also doesn't help that I feel generally underpaid. In the back of my mind, I hear the voice of feminists past saying, "This is why women don't make money. They don't speak up and advocate for themselves when they need to." But then I hear the voice of all the unemployed saying, "Be glad you have a job and got a raise at all. Now shut up." I'm looking for some outside perspective.

I would ask about adding an incentive plan or replacing your raise with an incentive plan. If your impact on the bottom line is measurable, nothing wrong with you getting a cut.

Sure you get BAH but the housing allowances aren't what they used to be. People on base now have to pay utilities and things because the government is really hard up for cash. Yep, they also don't have to pay taxes on their money that's earned while they are in country. They also earn a lot less than the government contractors that are working there and also not paying taxes on their first $80,000. Yep, I say first $80,000 because most contractors earn two to three times that. It was amazing when DH left the military and when to Afghanistan and earned ten times what he was making when he was military and he was doing the same job!

As for the health care it sucks ass. Lots of providers refuse to take Tricare because the payments are so low. This impacts Medicare because any provider who takes Medicare has to take Tricare so the providers who have had it with Tricare drop all their Medicare patients as well. The military is trying to get out of the medical business and stop treating the families of the service members but it's impossible when you can't find providers willing to take the crappy reimbursements. When things are denied it cal literally take an act of congress to get them covered. The Tricare service centers have departments that specifically deal with Congressional calls.

But you're right, there is job security and people who want to retire or leave the service can't always do so. If you are an Arabic linguist or a psychiatrist you may not be able to separate or retire because your job is too important.

There are some enlisted families who make so little they have to have food stamps. This is a disgrace.
