I don’t know that I buy the “gateway crime” theory that jumping turnstiles leads to greater crime than otherwise would have been committed.

I get that it is frustrating and maybe not good policy - just yesterday I exited Metro behind 4 early 20-ish people who just blatantly squeezed through the gates one after another, the alarm ringing but being completely ignored by the station manager. While these young adults probably were not wealthy, judging by their dress, phones/headphones, and food bag (I guess technically another violation), they weren’t so poor that they could not have paid for the ride like virtually everyone else on the train. I just don’t know that the blatant disregard for the one law actually leads someone to decide to deal drugs or commit violent acts.

You can't blame crime solely on the police and society, even in an era in which systemic racism persists. That "victim mentality" implies a complete abdication of personal responsibility, as well as the responsibility of a family and community to its youth.

That I thought that 17-year-old boy who fatally shot his mother and his 6-year-old brother in their Virginia home and shot and wounded his father before stealing a car and driving all the way to North Carolina looked familiar...
He jumped a turnstyle at Metro Center a few months ago. Yes, that totally explains everything. He got a taste of excitement from that petty crime and became thirsty for more - he looked to do something to push the limit.

If my kid jumped a turn style I would kick his butt, he would be grounded forever, and then he would have to write letters of apology and hand deliver them. What's wrong today is these kids have parents who either don't care about them or think they can do no wrong. It's the parents..point blank.

This is exactly it, when I was growing up kids weren't shooting up schools or acting out and getting off on the so called term affluenza. They were spanked and there were consequences.
