Her teenage sons lime to work on cars, so they figure out how to get the parts and they either do the work themselves or take the car and replacement parts to a guy they found who works on them pretty cheap. I don’t know...it works out well for them because it’s a hobby and they enjoy it. They are definitely not status people at all. They just truly feel that it’s a cost-effective way to go.

It sounds like tinkering with cars is a hobby, not a "cost effective way to go".

I’m in the same boat as the previous poster. Some actually enjoy driving cars and it is a cost effective way to go if you want a stylish, well handling, fun car to own after the previous owner has taken the depreciation. If you view car ownership as strictly transportation, than luxury/sports cars will never have any value to you no matter the price. If you know what you are looking for, you can mitigate the risks of owning a German car. I also will work on my own car on occasion, but will just take the parts to my mechanic for maintenance which isn't significantly cost more than other cars for labor.

Used bmw is good for person who is savvy about maintenance.

If you are not, go Japanese/Korean/American.
