Best university daughter can transfer into with mediocre first year gpa at a US News top 10?

Figure out the problem and have her stay to tough it out, unless she's suicidal or been raped or something. Maybe she needs a different major or a different dorm to live in. Maybe she needs to take only 12 credits instead of 18. Maybe she needs a pep talk or a simple non-judgmental hug.

Are you in MoCo? A state school like UMD might be a good option.

Sorry, OP, that your DD has had a rough start. Freshman year can be bumpy so I'm sure it's hard to know if it's fit or adjustment.

If I were in your shoes, I'd keep all options open. Regarding the transfer applications, I don't have a specific school to suggest but would likely include 1-2 near your home since wanting to return is very common and understandable. Then maybe 1 more that she can articulate why it's a good fit. She would have learned a lot by now. Describe what looking for and not why leaving - wording s/b positive. One note: I think transfer apps usually still need a recommendation.

I'd also emphasize to her that it can be admirable to make a change if needed.

Then you can both see how this semester goes. She might hit a better stride and change her mind. Or, she could possibly take a semester away, and restart again after a break (work, take a local class, etc).

Good luck!

What if she gets a C, B-, B-, A? She'll need to maintain a certain average in her major so unless gym is a requirement in her major, adding on an "easy" class might not do it.

Slackers don't go from say 2.5 to 4.0 -- it's magical thinking to even think that's realistic. And even then, with a perfect 40, the acc GPA would only be in the 3.25 range, which is very low for any school in the top 50.

This is not necessarily true--schools and departments vary widely. 3.25 is above the mean for many T50 schools.
