I'm tired of all the DC area people bashing: tell me what you like about living here!

What do you find awesome about Silver Spring (seriously)?

- 3 hrs is pretty nearby compared to many places I've lived.

Exactly. Compared to Ohio, DC is practically beachfront property!

Sigh. Well of course DC beats the pants off Ohio.

The beaches are far compared to those nearby most major U.S. cities: NY, Boston, LA, San Francisco, Miami, etc.

Nearby beaches aren't really a huge selling point for DC.

I agree with this. Also, the beaches are so overdeveloped that they don't appeal all that much to me.

Great post. Do you live on the Hill? I ask as we have thought about moving there. Where would you recommend?

Sorry, I love the hill but live on the west side of the Red Line.

The Hill is amazing but I think that the schools there are more of a work in progress. Good luck!

I'm a new poster but I too am a fan of Silver Spring. We moved here years after living several years in the city.

Let's see - one of us is employed by Discovery for the past 15 years, one of the greatest companies to work for in our opinion. Incredibly generous with scheduling, flexibility, wellness center onsite the whole family can use, and state-of-the-art daycare center on site! And you can't beat the commute from near downtown SS where we live.

One of us works downtown DC, and it's an easy commute - just hop on the red line, hop off, boom. Plus, more and more organizations are moving to SS.

Those are definitely the main reasons - excellent daycare at work and great commutes do great things to your quality of life. Also, we can afford a great house - three bedrooms with a huge yard here, in a family-friendly, walkable neighborhood right up against Sligo Creek trails, with farmer's markets in walking distance and nearby, tons of parks, families are very involved with the schools and I am confident they will improve (though there are magnets if not, and hey, our oldest will start middle school several years after we moved in, and if it's time to move, we will move, chances are we will have more opportunities in the coming years - this is technically our starter home I guess!).

I love, love, love, people who are not afraid to say where they are from! How boring would it be if everyone were the same?

Does anyone have a problem with the crime? This is not to bring other cities into it (as we know all major cities have crime, so you need not remind us). I'm just wondering, does anyone have a problem with the guns?

Another thing I'm grateful for. I'm glad I'm not living back in Cleveland where it was easier to get a gun. (Speaking of Ohio....) The criminals always have guns. I'd rather my next door neighbor with a drinking problem didn't have one too!

Yes. Crime and especially violent crime is a serious issue where I live in the "North Tivoli"/Target area. I am over it. Can't wait to get out. It's the only dealbreaker here, as far as I'm concerned.

don't be a snot. the point of this thread is to be positive. either go back to ohio, or suck it up and stop complaining.

Dude, I am not even from Ohio.

It's not a positive thread when you bash another area.

No, I don't. I think it's because there is some vocal but significant subset of posters who are on here because they feel lonely or out of touch with the community, and this board is a place to vent and to find some kind of human interaction, however remote and often abrasive.

You really can't assume that this board is representative of anyone. We've got no idea who is on here, how many people, who the negative posters are and whether there are many repeat posters in one category or another.

The fact is, so people move to DC from somewhere else because they prefer DC to other places, and it's quite possible that the people who find that they don't like it have many bases for comparison because they've lived all over the world. I've lived in several U.S. cities that are not "go-to" cities. Most people there grew up there. The teenagers complain that they want to get out, but few adults do, because they have no way to compare. If nobody moves to Fort Wayne, you won't have many malcontents complaining that it isn't as good as DC.

Everyplace sucks in one way or another, to someone or other. The difference is that DC has a forum like this, where lonely, bored, or homesick people can get a little relief and blow off steam.

That the city comes to a standstill during a big snow!!!! local Feds close, schools close, etc..

I posted on another tag:

ONCE IF FOR ALL QUIT COMPARING DC TO CHICAGO AND BOSTON AND MASS AND CLEVELAND, ETC. THAT GET SNOW ALL WINTER LONG!! DC is a southern city---we rarely get one this big. I was in Atlanta during a 4 inch snowstorm and things were shut for days. We do not have the resources or the capacity to handle this. I am a native Washingtonian and this is one of the things I always loved about this city. We DO shut down during a big snow. It's wonderful. I feel like a kid. Our schools would close for a week (we'd make it up in the summer) and it was the greatest thing ever.

I am married to a Clevelander so he is in disbelief and loves to get his digs in, but even he understands it. I did not drive in the snow, never learned how. He grew up doing it. I'd be a danger on the road today--he would be fine.

Okay?

People are very educated here. #1 for me!
It's very diverse.
It's a city, but very GREEN one. Not dirty, tall buildings, etc.
Good public transportation.
Some of the BEST public schools and universities in the country. (instate tuition to UVA, William&Mary, etc.)
Great medical care.
Free museums. Great museums.
Good bars and restaurants.
4 season a year---winter, spring, summer and Fall. Not blah, blah, every day the same.
International. My son's preschool in NW as more International kids than American kids.
Only a 5 hour flight to London.

As much as I love visiting friends in other parts of the country....I get antsy and know I couldn't live anywhere else. I love Manhattan but a little too busy and crowded for me.

Every city in the world has its detractors. I've never lived anywhere that didn't have its share of vocal critics. *shrug*

Self-loathing. Common among the highly educated.
