Get rid of any recurring payments that aren't necessary and reduce the ones that are necessary. One car, one insurance payment, cheap cell phone plan, no cable TV, cheap internet. $36k buys a lot when you don't owe anyone any money

It does. But here's the problem - I have yet to find a LCOL area I want to live in full time. There are plenty where I'd spend 4-6 months, but none I want to live in full time.

This is OP - we actually do live in a pretty LCOL area (left DC in part to move somewhere cheaper). There are some people who live here on fixed incomes, so obviously it's possible to live very inexpensively. Maybe I'm just too bougie for what it takes to do that. ("Maybe" = obviously too bougie.)

I should be more precise - there aren't any LCOL area I'd want to retire to full time. There are plenty I'd move to for work.

Oh I mean even in a low cost of living area life still has expenses! It's *less* than in DC but it's still not like you're just swimming in extra cash, because food is suddenly free or anything.

My Mom always told me folks not working under 60 are just unemployed they aint retired.

I fully funded my kids college with 529s before retirement. I do not use food stamps or welfare. I have a paid for house on a golf course.

Where does your health insurance come from?

Explained earlier that healthcare is cheap if you have a low income. Having wealth and having an income are not the same thing

This crowd is too snobby to ever move there but there really are some nice places to live down south. I moved to Alabama, bought a house on a golf course for $189k, unlimited golf included in $70/month hoa fee. I have access to neighborhood pool and a beach is 20 minutes away. I live 1 mile from a grocery store and home depot

Healthcare is not cheap, just subsidized.

This is the conceit of "real 'Murica" right here. Anyone who doesn't want to live in coastal Alabama is a snob. It couldn't possibly be that the things they like to do aren't there?

But suggest that one of them is a snob for not wanting to live in NYC, or SF, or DC, and boy, will you get a different reaction.

That cheap healthcare has limited access to providers, though. So just pray you don't develop a complex condition or need something like mental health services.

Wow, you are really going through some contortions to avoid admitting that your health care is heavily subsidized by the government (i.e. taxpayers). Is this is sore spot?

Is this a bad time to point out that you fir the classic definition of a welfare queen - much better, in fact, than the urban poor so often demonized that way?

It's not a sore spot at all. I'm extremely happy its available. My numbers don't work without it. Please continue your 60 hour weeks and inch worming through traffic everyday so that I can retire. I can't thank you enough
