This is a Colorado State University document. They are the Rams. When you stand up in front of a group, you are supposed to say, "Hello Rams!"

Why not the gender neutral word Goats instead of Rams?

It also marginalizes wethers, so it's not particularly inclusive.

Disgusting garbage. So tired of "academics" trying to dictate what language is, or isn't, acceptable. What a weak-minded nation we are becoming.

If I hear someone say "off the reservation," jew 'em down," or anything similar, at least I know never to be friends with that person & to avoid them if at all possible.

Fair enough, but if you were on your way to lunch and your colleague said, "I can't wait - I'm starving!" would you give them the same treatment?

or you could try to understand that they might have a different background than you? I came to a prestigious college from a tiny, rural town and I had literally n e v e r heard that phrases like that were offensive. I am very grateful to the kind people who were patient with me instead of just writing me off as some country bumpkin. (There were some of those, to be fair.)

Don't be so quick to judge. I'd bet that unless someone, particularly under 50, has seen some of these words/phrases in print like "Jew 'em" , they wouldn't even know they were using caustic language. Even spelled out "gyped" or "gipped" might not make the connection with gypsies, especially since now kids might only know the group as Romany, or in some cases Travellers.

Part of the reasons college costs are so high is you have entire departments with FTEs and even VPs in some cases focused on issues like this

I would fire anyone who worked on this for waste

+1

I’m Jewish and now live in a small city in the midwest. My boss is as liberal as they come, but grew up in a very small town about an hour outside of our city and never once considered?the origin of “Jew them down” until she met me. We all learn from each other.

Why is academics in quotes? That’s what they are.

Anyway, they aren’t trying to dictate your language or mine, or—I’d wager to guess—most people who visit this site. This is a list of terms for the place that hired them to make this list. Bully for you if you don’t want to use it. (But also be aware that you might need to ask yourself why you’re so personally offended.)

This is another instance where I have to remind myself that, as bad as this sounds, the VAST majority of people I know in real life are not this stupid/radical left/intolerant. In fact, I can't actually think of one person I know who wouldn't call this list total BS. Still disheartening that a college would print it.

But most people on the right twist things around like you do here in order to suit your own needs.

From the document itself:

"What this document is not: This is not an official policy or required practice. This document is intended as a
resource to help our campus community reflect our Principles of Community particularly inclusion, respect, and
social justice. The language in the guide may not apply to every individual and it is critical to take personal
preference into account. The guide is not about political-correctness or policing grammar, but rather helping
communicators practice inclusive language and helping everyone on our campus feel welcomed, respected, and
valued."

It provides an explanation for every single line item as to why some people might be bothered by it. The reader can choose to care about it or not.

In your case, I suspect you are the kind of person who thinks this is all ridiculous PC culture but sh*ts their pants when someone says "Happy Holidays" to you.

I guess how lucky for them that they're not the Indians, Cowboys, or Redskins.

The irony of course is that a RAM is a very gender-specific designation! Stupid is as stupid does. Oh wait, I'm not allowed to say stupid, am I?

I find it interesting that you think this is about allowing rather than giving you information to make your own choice about language as the document clearly states. But go on feeling persecuted; you seem to thrive on it.

It's cute that you think that.

As a French person, I find this list fascinating. I agree with some items on that list, particularly referring to mental health. Others, not so much...
