Middle schools and the lottery

NP. My kid takes advanced math at Latin in 6th grade. He doesn't sit in class with kids who work at grade level, let alone kids who work below.

ELA classes are a lot smaller than in DCPS, so not a big deal if a few kids are behind the others.

Many downcast 4th grade parents this week at our EotP DCPS. I'm hearing about Latin WL numbers in the 500s. I'm hearing about BASIS WL numbers in the 300s. Few parents seem enthusiastic about progressing to our deeply troubled assigned DCPS MS. Not difficult to imagine some of these people in Fairfax, Arlington in MoCo in the fall.

Are there seriously Basis waitlist numbers in the 300s?? And Latin in the 500s???

Yeah I will believe this when I see it. I think folks are trolling. I bet waitlists are like usual - 300s for Latin and 130 or so for basis. Frankly I have a basis number in the 70s and I haven't heard of anyone yet with a worse number!

Basis accepted 135 students into 5th grade and there are 188 on the waitlist.

Are there even that many kids that age in DC?

Someone in another thread firmly asserted that they only accepted 110 this year — that they’ll accept more depending upon 9th grade matriculation.

Are you someone with access to the MySchool data?

I'm not believing any random DCUM poster until there is a link posted to actual data. I got tricked the other day by some quoted in the newspaper saying the Mueller report was over 700 pages long . . . only to later hear "only" 400 pages

DD is in at Basis. She’s at an immersion private and I hadn’t really researched schools prior to our submission. I’d have added Latin to the list. Basis appealed to me on the basis of strong STEM (which is where our school is lacking). Recognizing that there’s no comparison to TJ, but is a school where kids stronger in the humanities need not apply?

There are humanities oriented kids at Basis (my kid is one). In last 2 years (including class of 2019) 3 kids are going to art schools after graduation.

The thing about BASIS is you can’t really escape Science or Math. MS art and drama and music are good. To graduate you must take either AP Calc AB or BC. . But you can also take APs in US, Euro and World History, Art History, Psych as well as all the science and Comp Sci, Eng Lang and Lit, Bio and Physics in 6-8th and I think at least 2 science APs are required. if you dig into their. Website I think the course sequence and grad requirements are there — look at the Handbook and courses offered.

Thank you! What you’ve described is what we’re ideally looking for. The problem at our current school is that I think the humanities program is amazing, but to the exclusion of all else. My fear is/was transferring to a school at the other end of the spectrum.

Someone reading this thread who did not apply to Basis for 5th should do a post lottery app & report back on WL #.
Same for Latin.

I'm the PP who got a spot at Basis. Didn't apply to Latin. Would this only work for someone who was WL'd everywhere? If not, I'll try.

There was a discussion that they said at an open house that they would only accept 110. I wouldn't necessarily say that that is a firm assertion.
