DC Elementary Schools - any real consequences to unexcused absences?

this was a huge problem for our family when our kid's need for special education was based on an anxiety disorder that led to school refusal.
interestingly, the school also never followed up despite us missing more than the threshold number of days, saying "oh we know you're trying to get him here." They just didn't record the absences. There were a lot of sketchy things going on.
