Is Keira Knightley the Meryl Streep of our time?

I also co-sign on Cate Blanchett. Love her. Kidman doesn't compare to Blanchett and there is absolutely NO comparison from KK to Meryl. OP trolled us all.

Blanchett, Kidman, Winslet and many more before KK. And I like Keira.

She doesn’t usually get the leading roles for whatever reason, but Laura Linney is brilliant.

Um, no. No, she is not "pretty much in every British movie of substance."

That would be Lily James, who is in everything, including some US films like Baby Driver.

And doesn't move her upper lip when she talks. Drives me crazy.

Oh, I like this idea! She was hesartbreaking in Manchester by the Sea.

She was also good in Wendy and Lucy, and in My Week With Marilyn. She takes far more risks, too, acting in lots of indie/auteur/experimental films: I'm Not There; Synecdoche, New York; The Station Agent; etc.

I think that Knightly is a decent actress, but her range has been pretty narrow.

Not to be harsh, but Michelle Williams is pretty forgettable. I doubt the average person could name one movie she has been in.

Not the same league as Streep or Blanchett.

The average person you quoted listed 5 films MW is in, and I'll add Blue Valentine to the list.

She's also set to be Gwen Verdon in an upcoming tv show about Bob Fosse and frankly there aren't too many actresses today who is enough of a triple threat to play Verdon.

I am an average movie goer, and the only movie I recognize is Manchester by the Sea. Those movies listed are not movies the average moviegoer sees.

LOL. No.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy her. But, nowhere near the chops that Meryl has.

I agree. I think she's pretty amazing. And very versatile. Not many women can come from teen dramas on the CW (Dawson's Creek) to legitimate, challenging roles. And she does it well.

Blanchett and Winslet, yes.

Kidman, no. She's as popular as she is b/c she is willing to show a lot of nudity. And b/c of her marriages.

Actually Kidman was shut out of big mainstream Hollywood after her divorce from Cruise. She hasn’t really made it back (her success is more from smaller filmmakers or directors and recently she’s just getting her own stuff made.) And no one says she gained any fame from living and raising her family with Keith Urban in Nashville for the last dozen years. She was remarkable in Big Little Lies.

To be the next Meryl an actress must shine in both dramatic and comedic roles. Anne Hathaway had potential at one point but she doesn’t get as many roles anymore. Rachel McAdams is another one.

And if we’re mentioning actresses over 50 I think Viola Davis is fantastic

Lauren Bacall snapped at David Letterman when he'd called Nicole Kidman a legend

That was 20 years ago. I also bristle when people throw around "legend" when referring to 30 yr olds.
