| Ha had this exact same choice last year till kid got off of waitlist at one of her top choices. Was going to W&M. We were in state but also didn’t want to be in rural Maine. Also, had Tulane but that was out when got Colby and W&M. |
All three of my kids said the same thing about W&M. That it has a weird vibe and would not even consider applying. I am not saying this is true, just repeating what I hear from my kids and their friends. |
Interesting. My daughter said the same thing. We tried to convince her that wasn't true, but she was convinced. |
My impression (with the instate kids) is that kids often get admitted into both UVA and William and Mary, and quirkier kids self-select to W&M for a less preppy and less sport-focused environment. |

I don't know that much about Colby, but still have a couple of thoughts. First, you should look a bit more into the race relations angle a bit as a quick look at Princeton Review shows Colby at #16 for Little Race/Class Interactions while William and Mary is at the other end of the spectrum at #3 for Lots of Race/Class Interactions.
https://www.princetonreview.com/college/colby-college-1023880 https://www.princetonreview.com/college/william---mary-1022846 Second, keep in mind that Maine in winter is quite different to Maine in summer. Winters there may be fine or even great there depending on the person, but you should be aware of the big difference in seasons. They are both fine schools. Pick the best fit. |
DC said the same thing, too. Gave it a shot and transferred out after a year, also citing that the other kids were “too weird.” |
I wonder how much costs plays in this for kids. It didn’t for me, but it took a long time to pay off undergrad loans. Colby seems very pricey. I wonder if they do any financial aid for upper “middle class” families (HHI below 200k). |
Is this how you raised them? |
If they don’t like it, they don’t like it. No college is for everyone. If you’re gonna drop all that money on college, might as well have your kids go where they’re happy. |
