I love when people going to Vail/Beaver Creek and complain about how expensive it is. Beaver Creek has an escalator to the slopes. What do you expect?
We are heading north for spring break. In the last few days, some mountains in New England have received over 3 feet of fresh snow. Has anyone skiied Whiteface in NY? Kids want to see Lake Placid area. We have young kids, but they are decent skiers. Just wondering if the terrain will be too hard. |
And they just announced 10 days at Crested Butte are included with Epic this year! |
I am not a beach kinda girl.
But we have 20 years to retirement and he is pricing homes in the Breck/Dillion/Frisco area.
|
WTH is going skiing when they are 70+ in age? |
| We are at Snowbird and the snow is plentiful. |
My father is 80 and still skis. Usually not all day, but gets in a decent # of runs. My best friend's mother is 86 and still skis although she is starting to slow down. I was skiing last week and met an older woman who went heliskiing in Canada last year and spends 3 months living in a ski town each year. Knees and hips wiling I have every intention of skiing after retirement - my plan is to rent a condo for a month or so, maybe in the same town each year, maybe in different towns. So far I like Jackson, Park City and Telluride as options because they are real towns. Maybe Truckee. While I love Vail as a ski area, I am not sure I want to spend a month there. It's good motivation to keep fit. |

| Have you looked into going with the Ski Club of Washington, DC? My Dad used to be a member a while ago and we went on some of their trips. |
|
We rented skis for the season locally and then brought them with us out west. Didn’t incur any additional baggage costs on southwest. Took an Uber from Salt Lake City to our resort, then the free resort shuttle between mountains in park city. Home away for the condo. Bought plane tix during the bi-annual southwest sale + points.
The most expensive part of the trip was lift tickets. |
Are you serious?!? Thousands and thousands of people! Every trip out West we meet retirees who spend months skiing and then head somewhere else at the end of the season. I plan to do he exact same thing although I’ll also be throwing in trips to Chile as well as Europe if I can afford it. Skiing is an incredible life long sport for many, many people. |
We went to beaver creek last year and going whiteface this year. They have been getting great snow! It is kid friendly. It can be icy but not this year. Kids are 11, 9 and 8 and are ok skiers. Check out white face lodge. Definitely Disney ish but kids love it. There are other quainter hotels though. |

Amateurs.
Go to Canada. Whistler. |
My dad is 74 and still goes out with us. Isn't doing moguls but is happily skiing blues with his grandkids. Our local mountain used to have a 70+ $10 ticket but got rid of it because too many people were taking advantage of it. |
| Have you looked at Mammoth in California? It's a favorite "local" ski area for southern Californians. It's probably more affordable than Tahoe, Taos, Vail, etc. |
The exchange rate certainly makes it a little cheaper but when I've looked at Whistler it's not cheap. We've been to Banff/LL several times and that wasn't cheap either. Granted we stay at the Chateau LL so we aren't trying to go budget, but the rest of the trip is pricey as well - lift tickets, car rental, airfare, etc. |
