Any thoughts on a great first car for teen?

OP here. Thanks everyone! She learned to drive on our Prius and loves that. But it's got about 200k miles on it, and a newer one is more than we want to spend. Ideally, she doesn't want a manual nor a large sedan, she likes the size of the Prius or Jetta. We'll check out some of the other recommendations provided here.

An AAA membership is great, but AAA can only help if they have a spare tire to put on the car. You really don't want to buy a car without a spare.

AAA can repair a puncture, and they will certainly tow your car somewhere that you can get a tire replaced. Really, how often have you put the spare tire on your vehicle? I have four vehicles that are a combined 39 years old. I've owned them all for their entire life, and I've driven exactly ONE of them on a spare. With the quality of tires these days, it's just not that important to have a spare on board.
