Would you let your rising senior go on an unchaperoned trip to the Bahamas?

Hm. I can picture lots of bad things happening with 17 year olds going to the Bahamas for two weeks.
That said, when I was 17 I traveled in Great Britain, Germany and France by myself for six weeks (sometimes staying with relatives or family friends, sometimes in Youth Hostels.) I paid for everything with money I made working over the school year. I think that makes a difference in my mind. If the kids are paying for the trip themselves, with money they earned, not money they were gifted, I feel better about it somehow. And of course you need to know your kid. I think if my kid showed the initiative to plan and earn money for a trip, at 17 I'd feel like I need to allow it. I would be happier with my kid traveling with just a few friends, to a place with sightseeing to do. I worry if it's a big group of friends just renting a beach house. Too much decadence and free time? |

I consider myself fairly liberal when it comes to matters like this, and even for my very responsible kid my answer would be no.
Kids die from alcohol poisoning. And even without his own safety being at risk, I don't want my kid to be in the position where he needs to decide whether and how to get a drunk and passed out kid to hospital to get his stomach pumped, for example. In a foreign country where they might be much more strict about teen drinking. I'd actually be far more inclined to let them go by themselves (to Europe or something as a PP said) than with a bunch of other kids. |
