I grew up in Italy (Rome) and the most popular nickname I heard for Chiara was Chiarina and Chi (because Romans shorten everything to an absurd degree).
Kiki is rough sounding. I wouldn't recommend it. |

RaRa RiRi (pronounced RyeRye) What about Kira as a nn? |
| Our DD is named Chiara. She’s also named after what would have been her Italian great-grandmother. Surprisingly, when we’ve said her name, lots of people have asked whether it’s spelled “the Italian way” or with a “k.” We have a very Italian sounding last name, so there is that, although a lot of the people who have asked don’t know our last name. Maybe it’s catching on here in the States. My father-in-law and his family who are from Italy sometimes call her Chiarina as a term of endearment, and also pronounce her name with an Italian accent and use only two syllables — it ends up sounding something like Kah-Dah. We don’t otherwise shorten her name. |
I'm the PP who has "trouble" with Kiki. Shrug. I don't have a lisp or anything and I'm American with a very neutral accent (raised in Alaska). It's just harder for me to get the K sound out crisply when followed by "ee" vs any other vowel sound. It makes Kiki sound muddled when I say it and yes a bit like "giggy." However not the case with KK, kicky, caca, or cocoa. Sounds like just me though but thought I'd mention it for OP. |
Wow what a hag bag. If I meet your kid, I'm calling him Chris, no matter how much you try to "it's Christopher" me. Seriously. |
I laughed. I believe a lot of the people on this Board can't possibly be having sex regularly. |
In some cultures, that is. In other cultures, like Russian, nicknames are even more prevalent than they are in the U.S.. |
No, I'm not shocked. I'm disapproving. There's a difference. However, if it didn't bother you to be called Jess by the teachers, then it doesn't bother me. |

Well the PP with the little Christopher gets mortally offended if you call her son Chris
|
Well you're an insufferable bitch if you don't call people what THEY want to be called. I bet you're just as ugly in person. |
Lots of nicknames in Spanish speaking countries too. |
NP here - wow, that escalated. Pot, meet kettle. |
Yes, all good points. Plus, nicknames sometimes just happen among friends. |
