I don't understand what you're complaining about. For my kid's elementary school, the kindergarten orientation, back to school sneak peak and parent teacher conferences were all scheduled for weekdays. Some of those events, I was able to adjust my work schedule to attend, and some I was not. That's life. No, it doesn't make me a bad parent because I missed those things, but neither do I complain that other people have the opportunities to attend school events during the week when I can not.

I've always gone to the Parents Open House day which in recent years has been Columbus Day. It used to be Veterans Day.

Anyway I'll never go again. Last year the teacher in my child's seventh grade class called on ME! She asked me to explain the Parmenides Theory and then name at least five of the Articles of Confederation. I drew a blank and the kids started hooting and hollering and my own child was mortified. I left the classroom and vowed never to return.

Seventh graders in MCPS don't study US History. A very few study Geometry, but that teacher wouldn't randomly mix history in.

And, in a medical emergency, security will call an ambulance not help you into your car.

In the post war years, a large percentage of Montgomery county parents were indeed federal workers.

I cannot speak to whether Columbus Day used to be a school holiday, but in any case, in 2017, most working parents do not have Columbus Day off. MCPS should get rid of the entire ritual.

If it is a school event, it should be publicized as such. It is not even on the school system calendar.

How are you determining how many people have it off county-wide? There seem to be many parents who are able to attend at my kid's school. I would hate for them to cancel it. They have an event for Halloween too that many parents attend and I assume almost no one gets a day off for that.

I am not complaining and I think you are talking to the same person I am and not me? I think it is ridiculous that a PP would say "MCPS should do away with the entire thing" since all of a sudden not many people are federal workers? I replied to the bolded parts with NEWSflash.

1. You are going way too far back to even make a rationale analogy
2. A large percentage is considered minimum over 50%, which is inaccurate.
3. Having an Open House day for the families is one of the rare things MCPS does right and in our school about 3/4 of the parents attend in elementary school. So you might think it should be done away with but many enjoy it. That is why it is OPTIONAL.

True, but I'm the PP, and kindergarten orientation, back to school sneak peek and PT conferences are also not on the MCPS calendar. Presumably because different schools have different hours for open house...

I told my principal that I'm take a personal say that day to see my child's classes. She's pretty ticked off, but my child asked and I have never made it to any of her school events.

I hope you let your student's parents know so they don't waste their time coming in that day.

Two years ago my daughter's 1st grade teacher went to her child's in AM and then came in PM. She also invited the class to come back to the class on Veteran's Day after the parade and ceremony as a mini open house for just her class. I liked that a lot.
