I'm living abroad in the UK and I hate it.

You have a shitty attitude. Your expectations that living abroad is to be compared to living in the US is simple-minded at best.

You will be miserable. Period.

Isn't it odd that the vast majority of expats (like me) love the varied experience and the fact that it isn't like living in the US and then there are people like you who bitch and moan. Just be glad you're in a country where English is the default language.

Go back to Peoria. Make everybody happier.

Well, to be fair, the middle classes have a reputation for justifying stealing people's land by asserting themselves as a superior race, so you might want to watch out for them, too. They are a bit more sneaky, though.

I take yoga and tai chi classes in DC and no one talks to me. People are there to exercise.

I'm venting and saying what I really think. I don't go around acting rude. I feel this way after people have treated ME rudely here for no apparent reason. The British love to bash Americans and call me an idiot because they assume I voted for that buffoon. You have no idea what you're talking about. A British person would call you a c*** without batting an eyelash.

Well, so do many Americans. Just take a look over at the political subforum. Your point is?

Op, you might not realize it, but you sound very negative. I know this is a vent, but maybe you need to calibrate your expectations, and try to have a more positive attitude. Despite speaking the same language, these are two entirely different countries/cultures. I think you expected too many similarities so are having a hard time adjusting.

I will return at some point, but the thing that sucks for me is that I used to love it here so much (when visiting). But now that I'm living here, I'm seeing so many bad aspects of this place. People are RUDE! And there is so much hate being thrown at Americans. I get these snidey comments about being American all the time and I'm so tired of it. I'm polite and respectful to these people. I'm shy and soft-spoken (but very personable). I feel like all anyone is ever interested in is my money. Every interaction is based around money. There were so many things I used to like about it here, but now I feel depressed most of the time. And little tasks are more complicated here.

Changing demographics. The Pole and Russians came for the beauty and hooker industry and are very money oriented The Muslims came to set up small businesses and service industries and are very money oriented Bond Street traders are very money oriented. The high price of real estate has caused wealthy people from many countries to shelter funds in UK real estate. Money has become the linqua franca of the UK.

You see, now I think you are the poster who makes it their business to post things about how awful British people are and how Americans are better.

Is this your first time outside of America?

The "c" word is thrown around over there a lot more than here. I don't think it has quite the same connotation over there, and is often directed at men as well.

C**t does not have the same strong effect in the UK as it does in the States. If you are the OP, I noticed that you threw out the word "wanker" which is also a stronger word in the UK than something like "dick" would be in the UK. Maybe orient yourself to British slang as a very step in your acculturation.
