How do you get rid of cave crickets??!!

I stepped on those horrid cricketts with my barefeet two separate times!. So gross! I heard and felt a pop under my foot, and their slimy guts were all over my foot and the floor. I screamed bloody murder and I think I'm traumatized for life!

OMG....I feel for you. I HATE stepping on bugs....triple that if I'm barefoot and unaware. While my mind knows that these crickets are small and essentially harmless, they scare the shit out of me. They've started reappearing in my basement (they usually come in the fall/winter), so I'm going to use the window screen tip for my sump pump and basement drain and also get some sticky traps. I sometimes get frogs, so I'm a little freaked about trapping them, but I'll deal with that if it happens.

Luckily, they don't really turn into "infestation" problems, just seeing them in the tub every so often. I haven't had enough of a problem to need it, but I've heard BORIC ACID helps and it's not toxic to humans or pets (supposedly). They are so creepy! They're flat so you can't really squish them.

Why do you call them "Silverburgs"?

No, I'm currently fighting them in my basement. They are HUGE and look spiderish. They will jump at you if they see you coming, and even though they can't hurt you, there's something about a critter being willing to jump at a person in self-defense that gives me the creeps! Thank God they don't make cricket noises or those of us on this board would be totally out of our minds! But just the same, finding them in your home is at the very least, disturbing! They're too much of an "animal" to squash like a bug, the noise alone will make you ill. We've been doing catch and release, but that's a pain, and I don't know where they are coming from, so we're trying to seal off every crack in the basement.

Does anyone know if they go upstairs from basements or just prefer the dark and dank? I'd hate to think of them elsewhere in my home. We thought we had jumping spiders and then saw one close up. We'll be trying some of the solutions you shared here. Thanks!

We had one large one last spring, it was the first time I ever saw one and without my glasses I thought it was a huge spider, I was going to hit it with a fly swatter and it jumped on me. Guess I watched too many sci-fi movies but really got a scare from it. Yesterday my wife saw a small one in our 2nd floor bathroom that got away before she could kill it. I am not sure where or how many we have now but looking for ways to exterminate them.

Exterminators. Seriously. I don't love the idea of exterminators but after three months of those cave cricket bastards, including them jumping into the bed of our basement guest room (WHILE guests were sleeping there), I had it. They came and sprinkled pesticide along the baseboards and in the crawl spaces. Totally worked. It's been a year and I haven't seen one since.

They will eat anything- ive learned the hard way not to leave any laundry on the basement floor. They've left gross little holes in our clothes, ugh.

I am in tears after reading these post lmao i have never laughed so hard to myself

A dish of rat poison takes care of them. I put it under my washing machine because I have pets that I don't want to get into the poison.

7 years of battling those suckers and they are gone.

Oh, and have you seen the show Infested!? They did an episode on a family in College Park with a Cave Cricket nightmare.

Buy Niban in granules online and buy glue traps. An exterminator for crickets is a waste of money.

My exterminator took care of them in one visit.

Also, make sure that every teeny tiny hole is sealed up. I think they were squeezing in under our old basement door. Haven't seen any lately.

God, they are DISGUSTING. Thank you to the poster who mentioned the holes in the laundry. I thought we had moths, but now I'm guessing it was the crickets. GROSS.

Yes, they come upstairs. But they prefer the basements.

I live in Georgetown and have seen them at the top of my basement stairs - basically in my kitchen. That's when I got the exterminator (I'm also the PP).

This is nonsense. You cannot seal up every single hole in the basement. the exterminator is only good for approximately 4 months.

These glue traps from Amazon worked really well for me.

The trap is the stuff of nightmares when it is full of crickets but a cricket jumping on your leg is worse!

"Cave Crickets" would be a great name for an STD.
