UMC How Do I get a Good Deal Tuition?

Talked to DD this evening. She would like to apply to Perdue as well as UMD CP/ Baltimore for Engineering. Won't qualify for scholarships but at least these aren't over the top expensive.

Maybe VA Tech?

For those asking DD was in a signature program at her HS. Took hardest options available (except history)

She probably won't take SAT again. She's too inconsistent of a test scorer and I'm concerned that her score could go down. I realize UMD is a stretch but hopefully they see her as a hard working student.

My concern is that the model is that "wealthier" people subsidize the poor/ Middle Class at these colleges. I'm looking for a school that I'll really get the right bang for the buck. My DD has 3.8 unweighted and a 1250 on the SAT.

Did you and your do do better in school than your kid? You kid's sat score seems really low for your HHi/ses

AND she implies that this was a lucky result for DD and that she's likely to do worse if she tried again. She's probably more like an 1150 type student.

OP, subsidizing others is the least of your worries. You should concentrate on helping your kid get into a school whose degree is worth the paper its printed on.

They have plenty of money from endowment interest to subsidize the poorer students without this. I think it just makes them feel righteous to be able to punish people who have saved their entire lives.

The Ivies aren't an option for your DD so I wouldn't worry about it. In reality, there are plenty of parents who would happily pay full freight if their kids could get into any Ivy, let alone P.

OP's DD will not get into UVA with a 1250 SAT. My DD was a 1420 with a 3.7 unweighted GPA and she did not get in.

In state or out of state?

That's crazy...no UVA with 1420

This. Try to get her in the college which is the best fit for her.

UMD is a fan of statistics (test scores and GPA) so she may have an issue. Does she want such a large school? You would be surprised about the money that some of the SLAC offer. Make sure you are getting her to a school that is the right fit (in size, course offerings, outside interests, etc).
Also UMBC is much better than people imagine as well as St. Mary's

Here's what people like you do in VA, so maybe there's an MD equivalent (or move? We don't want to move to MD although it would be better for us logistically b/c of the college opportunities in VA):

2 years at community college then transfer to state school, or

Mason.
