Dave Ramsey and buying a house.

Anonymous
Someone mentioned the Facebook group which I am actually in. And I can tell you almost every person in it is from non major cities in the middle of nowhere. Bunch from Arkansas, Nebraska, Illonios, South Dakota etc...

His principles are fine in theory but they don't work for every single person. And his having no credit score advice is pretty much the worst advice for any person for their housing and employment future. Obviously that stuff matters much less in some of the places these people live. I'm sure the local grocery store isn't checking your credit score so it works fine for them.

Everyone has their weaknesses - for some it's alcohol, for some it's spending, for some it's chocolate, and for others it's something else.

You could lock me in a room with top shelf liquor, wine, and beer, and I wouldn't open a bottle. Similarly, you could lock me in a room with a credit card with tvs blasting opportunities to buy clothes, jewelry, cars, and I wouldn't buy anything I don't need. On the other hand, lock me in a room with chocolate, and I'm a goner.

Dave Ramsey gives his credit card advice to everyone as if they are all weak when it comes to buying things they cannot afford. Many people aren't, and there is no reason these people should cut up their credit cards any more than non-alcoholics shouldn't go to a bar.

I will add that with credit card incentive offers as good as they are today, if you are capable of being responsible and you're not using a rewards card you're kind of dumb. I've been on two entirely free vacations this year with my DW paid for in full with credit card points. We never run a balance, that is key. As the above poster said, Dave Ramsey's advice on credit cards is for those who need a serious spending intervention.
