Colleges w/ very strong academics but a more laid-back student population

Why not a liberal arts college like Kenyon, Oberlin, or Colorado College? They're full of thoughtful and motivated students who are not hyper competitive, yet intellectually curious.

What? Pomona is so laid back. Especially compared to its peers Swarthmore or Williams. Pitzer is as laid-back as it gets, so I guess it's cutthroat relative to it? But the academics at Pitzer aren't so strong.

OP said that her daughter doesn't want to be "in the middle of nowhere", so that would eliminate Kenyon. That aside, however, I agree with your characterization of students at those colleges.
