Why do people say they are from DC when they are not?

Cuba? Or, according to OP, Atlantis

If I'm in Canada why is it so darn hot?

OMG between this thread and the Kate Gosslin one, I'm in stitches over here!

Whoops - I meant Gosselin. (I don't watch the show or didn't until the "big episode.") I think I need a cupcake.

On the plus side now everyone will know where Rockville is. People from DC will have to start saying they are from the Rockville area.

I find this thread hilarious - well really just OP's rant - because I used to think the same way - in high school and college. I'm from DC - and I mean in the city, born and raised. In college, we hated it when the suburban kids would say they're from DC, because being from DC gave you some street cred (even though I was raised in upper NW) and we felt the suburban kids didn't deserve it. But, uh, I'm 33 now, and really could care less. Also curious if OP is actually a DC native ...

LOL! Did I go to high school with you?? I was thinking the same thing going through this thread! I figured the OP was some GW or AU kid originally from bumble-butt Iowa and is renting an apartment in Adam's Morgan and is really excited to be a city girl now and wants to put down anyone that isn't "legit."

I am right there with you - and probably knew both of you in HS! I am third generation DC born and raised and felt the same way, until I got out and saw a bit more of the world. I live in Kensington now, am married with kids and I couldn't care less where people say they are from. My guess is that OP is not a native, otherwise, why the oversensitivity? BTW - still love DC, but also love where I live now. I never feel like I need to compensate for my address. Oh brother.

I just tell everyone I am from the Maryland side of DC.

Get over yourself. Technically, D.C. is in Maryland and Virginia. Most of the land used to create the district was taken from those states...mostly Maryland.

Gosh, I'm embarrassed to say I live in DC. I guess that is why I say I am from (where I was born and raised). Even if it was decades ago.

Some people don't like the DC ways, such as saying "huh" when you know damn well what someone is saying.

Wait for it, predictably...

PP here. This may come as a complete shock: NOT every place outside of MD, VA and/or DC is Bumble Butt (name the town). In fact, I would far rather say I am from (where I was born and raised). No, I would never tell you where that is - LOL!

To this point, people who live in the burbs of Chicago still have a Chicago postal address, as with LA, Boston, etc. DC is not a metropolitan city within a state. The city of DC it all there is to it. So the surrounding burbs are all either Maryland or DC. I live 5 miles from downtown dc and my address is in Maryland. People can live 20 miles from downtown Chicago and still live in Chicago.

Um, not so sure about that. Skokie, Evanston, Niles, ect all have their own zip codes, they do not share addresses or zips with the city especially if they arent in Cook County.

LOL! I just peed myself.

I say I'm from the Skokie side of DC. When people look confused, I say, "Brazil nuts". If they continue to press me, I start singing the theme song to the Mission Impossible.

THIS is why I'm addicted to DCUM!!

(though really, I know I don't belong here; where are the forums for the "Just Outside of DC Suburban Moms?")

If I am talking to someone from the DC metro area I say I am from Alexandria (not even VA)
When I talk to someone from a different state or country, I say I am from DC.

With your logic, then people taking planes here would not be flying to DC?
Both airports are in VA.....
