What's the best place to move for semi retirement in Virginia? Couple in 50's wants to slow down

The downside (or upside, depending) of Williamsburg is that it's outside the 95 corridor. There's something to be said for the easy access to Amtrak, airports, DC, Philly, NYC, etc.

Check out Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke, nice airport to fly out of. Lynchburg/Lexington area also.

The LOW fire and rescue department is outstanding.
If you get involved here you will have more friends than you will ever believe possible. My husband and I looked everywhere for a retirement home, but once we drove into LOW we were home.

Would WV work? Harper's Ferry is 40 miles from IAD.

Huh? Newport News airport is maybe 15 miles away, Richmond a little further. There is also an Amtrak station in NN. Are you the same person who said Aldie and Middleburg weren't near an airport?

You won't get a direct flight, but you make it sound like Williamsburg is cut off from the rest of the world.

Richmond! Basically has whatever you are in to - arts, outdoors, restaurants, you name it. For 400-500K you can get a nice house, in pretty much any neighborhood, city or suburbs. Plus, if you are looking at it as a retirement destination, Richmond has one of the top hospitals in the state, and many specialists, which you are not going to have in smaller towns. Many people love Charlottesville, I can't stand it. Charlottesville is a college town, and always will be, and that has a lot of drawbacks.
