I'd be on the phone with a good tutor, twice a week to tackle science and math. Likely some SERIOUS gaps in the education, perhaps from previous years, i.e. algebra 1.

No.

You are wrong.

This kid is taking English 11. I assume this means the kid is in 11th grade?

Other than physics, there are no advanced classes on this list. No APs. No honors classes.

And the kid is taking Algebra 2 as an 11th grader.

Algebra 2 is taken in 8th around here if you are exceptionally gifted in math, 9th if you are advanced in math, and 10th if you are average in math.

OPs daughter is taking it in 11th, which puts her behind in math to start with. On top of that, she is making a C.

She might just be a hard working kid who struggles in school. Or she might have a learning disability.

Hours with a tutor might not be what she needs. She might not cut out for math and might have to steer her college goals into other areas where her strengths are.

Kids are in Algebra 2 in 11th grade UNLESS they took Algebra early - 8th grade as opposed to 9th grade. Being in Precal in 12th grade is what used to be normal.

Not i. This area.

Kids who are taking Algebra 2 in 11th grade are the ones that are not strong at math.

Most kids in fcps who are decent at math take Algebra 2 in 9th or 10th at the latest.

If they are taking Algebra 2 (not honors) in 11th in this area, then they are weak in math.

That is an 80's view. Today over half the kids take Algebra in the 8th grade (or earlier), and about 10% are 7th or earlier.

If the kid is strong or even above average in math, they would have taking Alg. 2 honors already.

My daughter -- for the junior year, will take
English 11 honors,
Physics honors
AP US history
Calculus AB (probably, possibly BC)
Ap Enviro Science
Band
Latin III

To pp who listed her daughter'schedule. I recommend AB over BC since it is better to learn calculus well than to learn it quickly. I say that as someone who uses math as part of my job, and struggled in graduate school. It isn't a race.

I focus on the effort. If she didn't turn in assignments and got an A-, I'm irritated. I wasn't annoyed the year she failed a quarter in algebra. I saw it coming, and let her fail so she could learn to dust herself off and carry on. She got Bs for the rest of that class

You people are crazy. You need to find a hobby instead of living life vicariously through your children.

Potential. Perform at your potential or else. The end.

11th graders in in alg ii are in the third track, not the regular track.

Seniors who are advanced are in calc their junior year.

Seniors in the regular track reach calc their senior year and can opt for stats,

Those in the slower track are in algebra ii as juniors.

Um, hello. The kids you consider to be in the slower track are considered to be average. Not sure where you get your information on average, gifted otherwise. A good amount of kids in my son's high school (private) are taking Geometry in 10th grade. My son is one year ahead (Algebra II in 10th), and while not gifted in math, he is still considered advanced. Pushing kids in math is an MCPS thing that screwed up many kids back in the day. The gifted ones did great, but everyone else (or anyone with a disability) had severe problems and were made to feel dumb.

Sorry you feel I insulted your precious child, I'm sure he is a lovely child. I don't say a word about the wisdom of MCPS's choices here. I came by my information honestly because my kids attend APS, and I know many people with kids in FCPS. I had discussions with school officials when my oldest was approaching the age when math tack mattered and we have to pick.

Such an asshole parent move. Ignore all the A's and focus on the ONE average grade. Why are you focused on improving it? Shouldn't the child be. If they aren't, you can't force them. The micromanaging of moms and their teens is insane these days.

Disappointing. Yep. Child can do better and you crank up the pressure until better is achieved. Summer is for rest and relaxation. For now, better is required.
