Were people thinner in the 60s & 70s or did the fashions of the time make it seem like they were?

Like my mom always wore cute little crop tops in the 70s but the skirt portion cam up to her belly button and the top came a little past her ribs so you only saw like 3 inches of her stomach and the most flattering part. Today the jeans go down to your public line practically...although I heard high waist jeans are now back in style so what do I know. The people were thinner though too...but a lot of them smoked!

As someone who has a butt I HATED the years those low waist pants were in fashion! They showed my crack with a thong wedging between my butt cheeks

Was it the fashions?

She is not pencil thin. In fact she could have starred in a Russ Meyer movie.

there are more food options now! Mexican food, asian food, or middle eastern food wasn't as big back then. Also no computers or cell phones so people were more likely to be outside and less time eating

Yes, they were. I sew and pattern sizes are based on the average size woman from the late 50s. I wear a 6 or 8 when I purchase clothing. I make a 12 or 14 when I sew my clothing. They were thinner than we are. We are a plus size nation. Growing up I often heard only you can control what you put in your mouth and how you move your body. My mom was thin and she didn't smoke or pop pills and she loved to cook and eat.

No we didn't! Where do younger your information? What we did dominant 3 meals a day and NO snacking between. If you were hungry, you waited till the next meal.

Absolutely no sense that we had to bring snacks and beverages when we left the house. Thirsty? Drink water. Hungry? Eat an apple.

+100! It boggles my mind when I see a mother and her kids in a museum or on the Metro carrying HUGE lunch boxes full of snacks (gummy snacks, Goldfish, etc) to tide them over until their next "big" meal. A bunch of my coworkers sit and munch other crunchy, less-than-healthy delicacies all day long at work and then complain about their waistline. Hmm, I wonder what could cause it all?

They were way thinner (looking at pics of my mom and her sisters) because they walked more, did more un automated housework/chores, ate less, didn't lounge in front of electronics all day. That being said, I don't think they were as fit as people who actively pursue an athletic lifestyle today. My mom today who is into sports pursuits is far more athletic/muscular than she was in her 20s during the 70s--though her slimness is the same.

Don't forget that the people who were the parents in the sixties and seventies had experienced the Depression and WWII during their childhood and young adult years. There was less food available when they grew up and a lot of people were really poor. The unemployment rate was 25%, so a lot of people had money problems and were working hard just to scrape by.

Some of the adults of the sixties had been undernourished when they were young and never completely recovered from that state.

Yes thinner, remember all the ciggie ads for Virgina Skims. Mom andGrandmom both smoked them and thin (smoking vs snacking)

I think people were definitely smaller decades ago. I became morbidly obese in the 80's and very rarely ever saw another person my size.

I don't think she's pencil thin either. I would consider her weight average but she looks extremely tall.
