Just because a middle schooler is capable of taking care of himself doesn't mean there's not a world of trouble he could get into at that age without adult supervision.

And because of this one incident, let's make sure we don't leave our middle schooler without adult supervision for a split second to make sure they don't get their first blowjobs until ... high school? .... college?

As you also surely know, "a world of trouble" is everywhere around us, and we would do a great disservice to our children not to help them learn how to navigate it on their own. And it starts with small steps, for example, by letting them stay home unsupervised, for long enough, even while risking, OMG, that they might get their first blowjob before their parents approve.

It wasn't just OMG my husband got his first blowjob before his parents approved, that poor girl's reputation was trashed for the rest of her junior high/high school years.

I think at some point we need to be discussing learning to trust our children.

My child starting coming home from school alone in 4th. We have had no problems. She calls when she gets home (or when walking home from bus stop).

Considering I work in cyber security, you are wrong. On a daily basis i see exactly what happens to kid's like yours.. You cannot get to a proxy server from any of the above mentioned platforms. You are ignorant and have no control on your kids devices, which is why you live in chronic fear.Hopefully I won't have to one day do a forensic analysis on your kids tablet in order to trace her steps.

I didn't know I live in chronic fear! While I am not a cyber security person, I can restrict my kids access. No smart phones and internet access at defined times/for specific reasons. Works well for us..but now that I know I am living in chronic fear...

Mentally ill people never do.

Thankfully I am not mentally ill.

Is there a teenager trolling the teen forum these days? It certainly seems like it.

What phone does he have?

He has an ipod touch he can text from. (imessage). He can also call me at work on our house phone, but he prefers to just text me when he gets home. Also, if I'm in a meeting or something, he knows I'll see the text on my cell, otherwise I might not get the work voicemail. He'll call me at work sometimes.

Thanks. This is a stupid question, but is the itouch registered to you, is the text number the same? We have an ipad at home that uses wifi and texts to my cell go to it, too. I'm guessing DS can just use the ipad to text "himself" and I'll see it on my phone, right?

No, he has an iCloud email address and that allows him to iMessage. You can't text anyone without an iPhone.

Not true. My ds's ipad is linked to my cell phone, so he can text from it. It shows up as me (so you've got to trust your kid not to do something wacky).

Bump. I'm considering dropping afternoon SACC for my 5th and 3rd grader. They would walk home from school (with friends) about 1/2 a mile, and would be alone from about 4:20-4:45 or at the latest 5pm. ( I would leave work at 4 and it just may run into traffic sometimes). 5th grader has done this a few times last year. Kids are 11 and 8 and I think can handle it.

^^ PP, is that just an FYI or do you have a question? FWIW, your plan sounds fine to me.
Anonymous
Yes, I should have said-- considering this but am wondering if there's some aspect of this I'm not considering. .

I wouldn't trust my 11 and 8 year old together. They are more likely to get hurt, cook up a crazy idea, or just annoy each other. I feel like being with/responsible for a sob is another layer of responsibility and my 11 yo is not ready. (He is ok alone).
