I would not do it, OP, unless you are willing to downsize considerably, or live an hour outside DC in a smaller house than you have now. DC is extremely expensive. If you live an hour outside the city, how often will you really enjoy all DC has to offer? Private schools are $40K or more, so you're not going to be able to afford them for your kids if you live in a city neighborhood with so-so schools. The grass is always greener....

Honest question: if DC is so hideously expensive, why the appeal? I'm from DE and don't get it.

Better job market, better opportunities to make $ than in DE, simple as that.

The two biggest employers are in DC. Federal Government and the military. That is why people move to DC. In addition, some major corporations are getting their headquarters in the DC area.
