What is the attitude about alcohol consumption at your Catholic school?

I have one kid at a Catholic school and one at a secular private. There is no difference in alcohol availability or consumption. I don't drink myself but most adults do. This seems to be a non-issue.

I was raised Catholic. Most of the Catholics I was raised around were Irish or Italian. Both cultures are highly social and enjoy a drink or five. Had you never met a Catholic before your kid went to this school? I was enjoying the communion wine from about age 12!

This thread is ridiculous! The drinking has nothing to do with being Catholic. Some adults like to enjoy a couple cocktails in social settings. Not sure what's wrong with the few that decided they need booze at a father-daughter dance, but that has nothing to do with culture or religious affiliation.

This thread is not anti Catholic.

If you want an anti Catholic thread, find one on any sacraments (particularly Catholic marriage or baptism), picking a Catholic church, returning to Catholicism...the list goes on.

There is a lot of hatred towards Catholics on dcum and you don't have to look hard to find it.

However, this thread is really not one of those places.

I was going to say - the two biggest alcoholics I knew were my friend's parents - an Episcopalian minister and his wife. Both slurringly drunk every time I went to her house.

Have you read any of the Bar Mitzvah threads?

There is plenty of discussion about behaviors of excess, drinking, partying in those threads.

This particular thread is not criticizing theology, religious practice, religious preference, Catholic beliefs, Catholic faith traditions, the choice to become Catholic, raising children as Catholic, getting married in the Catholic church, revisiting the Catholic faith, conversion, or any of the hundreds of Catholic topics that are usually bashed openly on dcum.

This thread is a mostly lighthearted poke at a subset of Catholic culture with many Catholic posters participating, including those of us who went to Catholic school as children and remember the alcohol flowing at Catholic social events.

It is not anti-Catholic to joke about a subculture of our religion that is common and well known.

Talking about drinking at weddings, auctions and Octoberfests is not bashing the Catholic faith or Catholic community

There is plenty of alcohol at events for our Presbyterian School. I agree with PP who noted alcohol is present at work events, preschool events, school events. If you don't like to drink, don't. Otherwise, I don't understand what the big deal is.
